Division leaders in Boston, Detroit, and Oakland have separated themselves a bit, but the Wild Card race looks like it will be a two-week run for the ages...

Top 6 teams separated by 3.5 games

2nd year.

Baltimore beat Texas in the AL Wild Card Game last year. St. Louis beat Atlanta.

I so hope all 6 end up tied and some team ends up playing 165 regular season games proving how dumb the two wild cards are.

This is playing out just how Bud wanted it when they added the second wild card.

Keep out the Yankees and I'm OK with whoever else makes it.

I personally think it would be awesome if the Royals squeaked in, went on a run through the playoffs, and met the Pirates in the World Series.

We'd have two of the worst franchises over the last 20 years in two of the smallest markets going at it.

With all these teams in the playoff hunt, we will need a cheat sheet of which NFL teams we hate in order for us to decide which baseball team to root for.

I'd like to see KC make the playoffs too. Anyone but NYY, but I don't want the Indians to make it either since I think their fans are the most obnoxious of all our division rivals.

Both KC and Pittsburgh re-focused their efforts to build up their farm systems a few years ago and now they are seeing the benefits. I hope White Sox management is taking notice.

A Royals vs. Pirates World Series would be fine with me. Then Fox and ESPN can whine about how horrible it is that small market teams made it to the World Series.

Better be careful giving the Royals props. I did that a while back and the masses here didn't seem to appreciate that too much.

That would be absolutely outstanding .. those are two of my favorite backup teams (when the Sox fall out of contention) to watch .. also, there are some big series being played this weekend .. going to be fun .. you have to love this time of year..

You mean extra regular season matches you don't have to pay the players for that will be high yield draws on both television and at the ballpark?

Yeah, baseball's gonna hate that.

5-16 in September now. They were 2 games up on the A's on August 31; now they're 8 1/2 back, Oakland's already clinched the division, and they're 1 1/2 games behind Cleveland for the second wild card.

They have played themselves right out of it, pulling their swoon a little earlier this year.

I just can't get excited over the wild card race, knowing that one team will beat the other in one arbitrary game after playing 162 meaningful ones.

Still think this was a scam fueled by tv contractors to try and sneak the Yankees and Red Sox in every year.

If you're going to expand the playoffs, then expand the playoffs. Kind of sucks that you have a whole pennant race then decide the real playoff team by playing one game.

Plus there's that whole ludicrous home/away switch after the one-game wild card playoff that only the deepest/most bankrolled teams that win the wild card can maintain competitive balance.

The sooner Bud is out and we get a decent commissioner again, the better,

Here's what each has left this week:

Tampa Bay 86-69 1 vs. Balt, 3 @NYY, 3 @Tor
Cleveland 86-70 off, 2 vs. CWS, 4 @Min
Texas 84-71 3 vs. Hou, 4 vs. LAA
Kansas City 82-73 3 @Sea, 4 @CWS
New York 82-74 off, 3 vs. TB, 3 @Hou
Baltimore 81-74 1 @TB, 3 vs. Tor, 3 vs. Bos

Unless Texas can put a run on, and given their September I don't see it happening even though they finish with a very easy schedule, it should be Tampa and Cleveland, and I wouldn't put it past the Tribe to get that game at home.

Cleveland fans have every right to be bitter *******s since they never win at anything.
Final matchups for the three teams:
Rays have one more in New York, then finish the season in Toronto
Indians have 4 against the Twins at Target field
Rangers host the Angels for 4
I would not be surprised to see the wild card game at Progressive field, considering who the Twins are putting on the mound for these last 4.

All three contenders win, so Rangers' elimination number is down to 3.

Tampa Bay 90-69
Cleveland 89-70
Texas 88-71

As far as tiebreakers go, Tampa wins the tiebreaker with Cleveland (4-2) but loses the one to Texas (3-4). Tribe win the tiebreaker with the Rangers (5-1).

If anyone can actually figure out to how that relates to who plays who in potential playoff games, you're better than I am:

I could never root for any team from Texas, and I couldn't root for Alex Rios playing for a team other than the White Sox when he seemed to care so little about playing for the White Sox.

Of course, what makes the wild card so wild anymore is that you don't so much make the postseason, but you earn an opportunity to make the postseason in a play-in game. It's really no different from the White Sox having to beat the Twins in a one-game playoff to make the postseason.

But if you're looking for former White Sox World Series stars this postseason, consider that Juan Uribe could win his third ring this year with his third team.

A three-way tie for the two wild-card play-in spots would be the most interesting way to end the AL season, or begin the postseason, if you will. Or you could have two teams tie for the second play-in slot and have a one-game playoff the day after the season to determine which team will be on the road for the one-game playoff with the winner going on the road in the divisional series.

The only thing guaranteed at this point is that Cleveland's last game won't be tomorrow. If it ends up being a three-team tie, Cleveland has the best record head-to-head among the three (7-5) while Tampa is 7-6 and Texas is 5-8, so they would get to choose their designation first (A, B, or C).

In that scenario, B plays at A on Monday. The winner gets one Wild Card spot; the loser goes to C on Tuesday and the winner of that game gets the other spot. It appears that Tampa would go to Cleveland on Monday, with the loser going to Texas on Tuesday, and that's before the wild card game would be played on Wednesday, where either Cleveland would be at Tampa, Tampa would be at Texas, or Texas would be at Cleveland.

The winner, regardless of who it is, would head to Boston, while Detroit starts their playoff series in Oakland. Prior to 2012, the wild card winner played the highest seed unless they were in the same division.

Just to pile on the Indians:
-They are 36-52 against teams better than 0.500 (The Sox also had 36 wins against > 0.500 teams)
-30-17 in one run games and 10-2 in extras

They have 'bust' written all over them.
