I'll always remember seeing him come out to pitch in the first game of that disastrous straight doubleheader at the end of June. I did a double-take when he was announced.

Kind of odd for the Sox to just let him go, it's not like they're saving salary.

The Sox were the fourth team to let him go this year. He has no business being on a major league roster.

He also has no value in a trade. Shrug.

Since these actions are supposed to remain confidential unless a deal is struck, do you have a link or some other indication of how you know about this?

Also, if he was claimed today, the Sox and Team X (maybe the Phillies?) have 48 hours to complete a deal. If no deal is reached, he remains with us. The Sox can pull him off waiver at any point during the 48 hours, too.

Best Wells to appear in a Sox uniform?

I'll always remember seeing him come out to pitch in the first game of that disastrous straight doubleheader at the end of June. I did a double-take when he was announced.

I was sitting next to the Kipnis family at that doubleheader against Cleveland when Wells came in to pitch. At that point in the game I think Jason had reached base all 4 times he had been at the dish. One of his relatives asked "who is this Wells guy?" when Kipnis came to bat, and when I explained he was a backup outfielder the whole crew razzed Jason like crazy as he came off the field when Casper managed to retire him.

In the late innings last night, I kept on thinking to myself as bad as the Sox farm system is, there has to be at least one right-handed bat better than Wells. He is absolutely atrocious.

Same applies for Danks the younger (but from the left side, obviously).

Many of our players will be claimed off waivers, doesn't mean anything until the team decides to let him go or not.

These claims are all over Rotoword, so I assume they are official and done, not in the secret part of the process. He was probably claimed 48 hours ago or whatever.

Yeah, and the Phillies have made a statement on having had their eye on him for a while (http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/sports/phillies/Phillies-claim-Casper-Wells-off-waivers.html).

Also, since I have a feeling that since nobody would care to break a story about Casper Wells, the Phillies probably did claim him 48 hours ago and we're only learning about it now because the Sox officially just gave him away.

Organizational depth! The Sox have a lot of that, it seems, as at least half the roster is organizational depth.

If the Sox were going to release him, they benefit finaancially from a team claiming him off waivers. Wells seemed a candidate for unconditional release.

That's not what Hawk kept saying. Hawkeroo kept saying that Casper has the tools to be an every day player. Good old Hawkeroo. Can someone claim him on waivers?

Obviously the Phillies think Hawk is right; they DFA'd Delmon Young in favor of Wells.
