The Cards offer was Martinez (#3) prospect for Alexei Ramirez

I'd have taken that deal.

6th paragraph. That is slightly unnerving if true.

With the money owed Ramirez and his age, I thought he was basically worthless, I guess not.

How the **** could Hahn turned down this deal?

The more I think about this, the Sox probably had to pick up a large amount of salary. Thats the only way this makes sense.

That would be salary dumping to the extreme. We just as soon give players away, if we are going to turn down a top 10 prospect in all of baseball for a declining Alexei. The only thing more ridiculous than us turning it down would be St Louis making that offer.
It's so ridiculous that I really doubt that offer was ever made by St Louis.
It kind of goes along with those other strange St Louis rumors that were about this afternoon such as we were insisting on David Freese as part of a package for Peavy and Alexei.

Agreed. I'm not going to crucify Hahn on the basis of this unsubstantiated rumor, which frankly sounds like a tall tale. I could see Martinez being involved in a larger package that involves Peavy, but straight up for Ramirez? I don't buy that it actually happened.

Unlike seemingly everyone else, I believe Alexei could draw such an offer. I don't, however, believe Hahn would turn it down. Alexei is a great defensive SS, and plate discipline be damned, he has a very solid bat. Surefire contributors at one of the most difficult positions to fill on the diamond aren't easy to find and have definite value to a contending club, whereas prospects are just that - prospects. Add in the fact that he is locked into a contract that IS NOT anywhere near horrible for a SS, and I think you can see the value both long and short term for him on that contender.

I refuse to beleive Hahn would turn this down. Martinez is a better prospect than I thought would get offered for Rios.

Well, as MLB Trade Rumors (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/chisox-reject-cardinals-offer-for-alexei-ramirez.html) points out, the offer apparently "involved" Ramirez and Carlos Martinez and thus, was probably not a one for one swap. If we don't know the other players involved or details involved, how can we make an informed judgment on the wisdom of whatever it was the Sox did?

Good read. I would imagine the Sox want position players unless they are deadling a pitcher. I trust the Sox when it comes to acquiring pitchers as well.

I'd like to see Wong traded to the Sox. Would Peavy & Alexei be enough to get Taveras/Wong?

We don't need Carlos Martinez. We need more Nestor Molina types.

The Cardinals are not trading Taveras for Jake Peavy, come on now.

Yeah, that's pretty ridiculous. He'll be their starting CF next year and is the number one prospect in baseball. Basically like trading Harper right before he started.

Fire Hahn for allowing this thread to even get started.

Regardless of how good the prospect is, I can't see them moving Ramirez unless they get a SS in return since they don't even have a backup right now.

Wishing we still had Eduardo Escobar rather than a two-month Francisco Liriano rental right about now. He was hitting .214 when the Twins farmed him out so he'd fit right in.

They'd probably play Beckham there for the rest of the year to see if he can do it in future years. 2B is our deepest minor league position.

When's the last organization that didn't have more than one player who could play shortstop?

Embarrasing.

The Tigers don't even have one. They guy they have pretending to be a SS is about to get a long, unpaid vacation.

That shouldn't be a consideration. You move anyone moveable with a good return given the state the team is in. A cheap SS could be picked up off the scrap heap.

Exactly. Beckham, when healthy, can be moved back to SS, plus we have some middle infielder types in Charlotte who could man the spot on a last place team.

I'm pretty sure that Keppinger could play shortstop just as poorly as he plays 2B or 3B or 1B. He's versatile.

If he's not moved himself, yeah. It would probably be Gillespie at 3B, Keppinger at 2B and Beckham at short for the rest of the year.

And we think our D is bad now....
But I certainly agree, getting a SS back isn't a consideration. We can find one on the scrapheap.

Yeah, but we need to figure out if Beckham can be at least average there. I actually see that working.

Keppinger would just be a place holder until one of our 2B is ready to come up.

This was reported on MLB Now this afternoon. It is also on MLB Trade Rumors (http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2013/07/chisox-reject-cardinals-offer-for-alexei-ramirez.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter). The trade would have been for minor leaguer Carlos Martinez. (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/martica04.shtml).

Nevermind. I just realized that this thread is already in What's the Score. I'm not sure why it is there, though. If MLB Network is reporting it, it is likely more than just a rumor.

Someone leaked something to a reporter, or it wouldn't be reported. My guess is that the Sox are trying to drive up Alexei's trade value.

Didn't you say claims that Beckham's defense were good at second were excuses made by Beckham apologists, and now you want him at SS?

I thought Beckham played a real good 3rd, but you'd like a better bat there...not that we have one there right now.
