Easily. Top 5. RT @SpaldingBalls (https://twitter.com/SpaldingBalls) @ProfessorParks (https://twitter.com/ProfessorParks) if the Micker Zapata-to-White Sox rumors are true, is he a top 10 prospect in that system?

I wonder if he goes by Mickey? Not a bad name for a power hitter.

Cubs have already signed two of the top ten, including one of the guys BA pegged as better.

True, but Theo was going to sign all the good prospects and draft all the good picks. That is his fiver year (or is it a seven year?) plan. The other 29 teams are only allowed to pick up the remains after Theo is done.

I see Gleyber Torres as top 5 ranked, but I don't see Mejia ranked even in the top 30 (per MLB.com.) Who is the second player?

That's a pretty standard signing bonus for a player of Zapata's talent

BA's rankings are seriously different than MLB.com. Our guy ranked 9th.

Sarcasm aside, the Cubs have added over $1 million of slot money to their coffers today. They'll be bringing in quite the international haul of players.

You have to be excited about what Theo is doing if you are a cubs fan. That farm system is going to be really, really deep by this time next year.

Cubs have signed the number 1 and number 3 international prospects. Both young kids as well.

It will cost (http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/ct-spt-0705-rogers-cubs-chicago-20130705,0,5555463.column)them.
But they decided that this year's crop was much better than next year's crop and decided to sacrifice next year. Worthy gamble.

Rangers are doing the same thing. To be the honest, the penalty isn't really harsh enough.

As a longtime White Sox fan stuck in Red Sox territory, I caution your knocking Theo. The Red Sox have had a terrific farm system for the last 10 years. They have turned out plenty of high quality players on their roster as well as those they used for trade bait. Their rapid turn around this year includes several rookies who have made solid contributions. Hopefully Hahn will do the same for our farm system.

Yes, but let's not pat Theo on the back too hard for that farm system. The Red Sox basically cheated the system for most of those years by offering big signing bonuses to players not drafted in the first round and giving in to ridiculous demands by scummy agents such as Borass.

Theo inherited that farm system. He has not had any experience of tearing down a crap team to build it up with prospects, one brick at a time. rdivaldi is right, Theo used the bottomless checkbook to draft out of slot and pick up (or retain, as the case may be) free agents to keep the Red Sox relevant. However, the new CBA guts the slotting system that wealthy teams like the Red Sox exploited. Now Theo is exploiting the ability to accumulate international signing slots. However, as we have seen over the years, international signings are less of a sure thing than domestic signing because there is less scouting information available.

Wait so Theo shouldn't get credit for seeing a loophole and exploiting it for the better of his franchise?

Sure, he should get credit for it, but that doesn't make him a master of scouting and player development, necessarily. Fewer loopholes in the new CBA to exploit.

He already found the next one and just signed two of the top three international free agents. I think this Theo cat and his team are pretty sharp guys.

They didn't find a loophole, they did exactly what any other front office could have done if they were unloading players. Trading for cap space isn't exactly a stroke of genius, plus they already had the 2nd most money to spend. Again, not all that impressive, just doing what they should be doing.
