Not a lot to choose from, particularly as to starting pitchers that would be in the Sox' price range. Steve Parris? Shane Reynolds? Brian Moehler? Dave Mlicki? Jason Bere? It looks like any upgrade in next year's starting pitching will be through trade or through improvement by our young arms.

I'd look at Omar Daal but I'm afraid you're right. There are some big impact position players but the would account for half of our total payroll if they were to sign, it certainly outlines the lack of parrody(without blaming anyone Daver), but in baseball it is not very funtional to contend via free agency, no pitching and some name bats=Texaslike performance woohoo.

A topical quote about Deivi Cruz and D'Angelo Jimenez (and the Padres) from BP...

"Rebuilding Gone Awry" (http://www.baseballprospectus.com/news/20020722dankberg.shtml)

That is the setup, if you will. Only the punch line has landed about as poorly as a Bud Selig-spun zinger. A series of managerial/organizational directives, starting with the decision to sign Deivi Cruz, has led this team to a sort of crossroads.

The decision to sign Cruz as an insurance policy at shortstop backfired immediately. Bochy decided, almost on a whim, to replace Ramon Vazquez with Cruz. While Cruz was at one time a plus defender, his range and hands have slipped to the point where he is now among the worst glove men in the game. His offense has been mediocre: a .250/.288/.348 line, while batting as high as third in the lineup. There is light at the end of the tunnel, as Bruce Bochy considers Vazquez his shortstop for 2003.

Even more hazardous is the fallout that occurred on the rest of the Padres infield. D'Angelo Jimenez, who was coming off of a solid rookie campaign as the Padres shortstop and who opened this season at second base, slumped early. After spending some time covering third base, he was traded to the Chicago White Sox for two minor leaguers of little consequence. Jimenez was a disappointment at the plate, hitting .240/.311/.327 with just four stolen bases. He struggled defensively as well, causing the Padres to sour on him.

Jeff D'Amico kinda interests me. He was very good for the Brewers in 2000, before spending most of 2001 on the DL. He's obviously not back to his 2000 form, is that due to coming off the injury or was 2000 just a fluke?

i was basing this on what i remember of his old fielding avg. plus he was always a pos influence in the clubhouse. i guess his fielding is not was it used to be.

Agree, with the lease agreement and a payroll of ~ $50 mil JR is guaranteed a profit.
