View Full Version : Honest fixes for 2014 with this team?

Of course this team could win 100 games and we wont say a thing about next year.

But, Hahn clearly expressed the right handed heavy team.
We have Dunn and Konerko is mid/late 30s.
Thornton aging.
Several guys on 1 year deals.

What's 2014 look like, who should we go after (FAs, trades, etc)

Looks like Sox are high on Sanchez, Johnson, Snodgress, Thompson.
Several building blocks, Sale, Viciedo, Reed, Quintana/Santiago

Your thoughts?

Your thoughts?

If the Tigers perform to expectations and win 92-95 games, we need Gordon Beckham and Dayan Viciedo to provide plus offense at their positions and the bullpen to be in the upper echelon in MLB in holding leads in order to compete with that win total.

Unless Dunn, Konerko, and Rios want to combine for 100 HRs and 300 RBIs and outslug Cabrera, Fielder, and Martinez.

How bout we worry bout this year??

Only thing I have to say about 2014 is, I hope Hawkins is a beast in the minors this year and Hawkins is starting with the big league team

Cot's has Konerko, Floyd, Crain and Wise as FAs, plus Thornton and Lindstrom as club options with cheap buyouts.

Can't see any of them back in '14, except manybe Paul if he takes a team-friendly deal, but the writing is on the wall after A.J.'s departure.

Otherwise my plan would be the same as I suggested for this offseason:

Find someone to take Dunn, Rios and Peavy's salaries for decent prospects.
Deal Viciedo, Flowers and Beckham while they still have potential, have relatively low salaries and teams could be swayed on giving us a quality younger/cost effective player or two for "potential".
Make some shrewd mid level cost younger FA signings for good talent to fill holes.
Draft smart for BPA, and pay for quality.

Gotta think Hahn is using 2013 as a transition year to clear some of Kenny's worst contracts and then having a good level of payroll room to remake the roster in his own manner. If anyone surprises this year and plays over his head, that's a bonus.

2014? Please. I'm worried about 2015, the year the Cubs win it all.

I'm not sure we're in such bad shape that we need to think about "fixing" things for a year from now. Only a bunch of losses to Detroit - especially at the end - separated the Sox from the postseason. I am not saying that's insignificant; but just as the Tigers are getting a healthy Martinez, we are getting a healthy Danks. I think we will compete all year long. And if a few breaks go our way, we might take the division.

We lost AJ, but I think Keppinger compensates in the lineup. Also, counting on a 35+ catcher to replicate a career year is risky; a similarly-aged Torii Hunter may be exposed defensively in cavernous Comerica.

Gillaspie is interesting. What if he wins the 3B job outright, and either Keppinger becomes the super-sub, or Beckham goes to the bench? Gillaspie doesn't have to be Ventura or Crede, but what if he's Herbert Perry?

The bottom line is that for 2014, we may not need to think about fixing or rebuilding, but rather ask if PK should be re-signed, or ask how to replace his production. And frankly, we may have an internal OF option that allows Dunn to play first with Viciedo at DH.

Things aren't necessarily as bleak as many seem to think.

There won't be any sort of shift in the Sox' philosophy until Dunn and Konerko are off the team.

There won't be any sort of shift in the Sox' philosophy until Dunn and Konerko are off the team. You can't lump those two together. Every team needs power in the lineup, but Konerko has been an effective hitter besides providing power. Dunn has not.

I think Hahn will do something w/ Crain, Thornton, Floyd.

All have some value. And if the return isn't immediate we have Axelrod, Marinez, Snodgress/Stewart to buy us time.

I'd keep most of our line up. I think beckham or ramirez are moved because of C. Sanchez SS/2B

The White Sox missed the Playoffs in 2012 by 3 games. A healthy John Danks will put the good guys on the Southside in the 2013 Playoffs. I'm expecting Gavin Floyd to have his best year in 2013, the last year of his present contract. If everything works out the way I think it will, the White Sox should make a shambles of the Central Division in 2013. I'm also expecting Adam Dunn to upgrade his batting average in 2013. Who knows he might get it up over 2:20 this year. It should be quite a year on the great Southside of Chicago in 2013.

Now you're talking.
I do think Detroit is a flawed team in some regards, and I prefer our pitching overall.

At some point Verlander has to cool off right? Or at least the odds would say that the Sox should be able to beat him since they haven't for like 5 years or whatever.

Also I'm not sure Detroit addressed their bullpen needs in the offseason so that could come back to bite them.

As for the future of the Sox I think this current coaching staff has them off to a great start as far as organizational philosophy of doing things the right way, preaching great defesne, ect. Just need the talent to execute.

I certainly don't expect that to happen. I just prefer our pitching overall.

What's the point of thinking about 2014 before the 2013 season? Seriously. I don't see what you take out of doing so as a fan. Enjoy the possibilities of this season.

No harm in looking to the future though, right?

That's why a lot of people enjoy Spring Training so much, seeing the future potential in the prospects who may get to crack the line-up in the next 2 years.

I agree, especially for a team like the White Sox who are clearly entering a cycle of major roster turnover.

Looking ahead is ok with this club. I just hope if any players have a bad year, its not Sale, Danks, Viciedo, Beckham and Flowers. That is basically the core of the future.

If Viciedo, Beckham and Flowers are part of the core of the future, we're gonna be a pretty bad team.

I'm hopeful that Hahn will acquire better talent once our big contract crunch lessens.
