View Full Version : What is YOUR go-to Sox cap?

I tend to wear Sox caps a lot during the season. What is YOUR Sox cap of choice?

For years I had an old beat-up adjustable one (it looks a lot like the President's).

Back in '09 I bought one of these and wore it constantly:
http://www.dugout-memories.com/ws19591.jpg

The only problem was that somehow it faded into a navy blue. Quickly. So, after this past season ended I decided it was time for a new cap.

MLB.com was running a "buy one cap, get one 50% off" last week so I ordered one of the authentic New Era caps as well as this throwback. Since it's ALREADY blue I don't have to worry about this one fading in the same way...:
http://mlb.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pMLB2-1629945dt.jpg

My authentic New Era one is a little big (need to send back for a smaller size; [New Era must have really inconsistent sizes because I have a Giants cap that's the same size but much tighter on the my head]) and I also find that they tend to fit non-big leaguers' heads funny, so the above cap will probably end up being my go-to.

I have caps marking the period 51-63, 71-75 and the current one.

I prefer the red 72 one myself.

I have about a dozen Sox caps in my closet. I used to love the fitted caps, but I've found they shrink and stain after so many times being worn to the park. My '59 Sox American Needle and '05 World Series hat fit a bit more snuggly than they used to, so they don't get as much wear. I bought a low-crown fitted 5950 in 2010, and that's never recovered from the sweat stains incurred on Frank Thomas Tribute Day when I sat in the upper left field corner.

Top three right now are the 2003-2006 BP hat, the '47 Twins diamond-sox cap, and the '47 Twins white panel/sox logo cap. All three caps I've rinsed off with soap and water at various points, and they always come out feeling and looking great. The '47 Twins hats are moving up the list. There are a couple more I'd like to pick up someday, but Lids.com seems to be out of certain sizes.

Right now, it's this Cooperstown collection 1983 hat that I got for my birthday last year, which was cool since I was born in '83.

Before that, it was just a standard normal black one that I wore for years.

My go-to hat is my fitted 1972 red hat. I wore it when we won the Series and it only get worn on special occasions, except this year I wore it at Sunday games. The World Series cap only gets worn when we get back there. :D:

I also sometimes wear a fitted black Sox hat at times, and I also have a fitted 1917 white cap for games in hot weather.

My everyday hat changes from year to year, I like the preworn caps and the two tone adjustable hats with a white front.

Got next year's everyday hat already, a preworn mid 60s block letter SOX dark navy adjustable from '47 Twins.

My go-to cap for playing and going to the ballpark was a fitted cap I bought at Grandstand in 2000 on a hot Sunday afternoon before a Sox game in the glorious summer when New Comiskey was the funnest place on earth. The current regulation cap, then and now. It has some stains now, but it remains the most comfortable cap I have.

My go-to cap for hiking and adventure used to be a khaki cap, a former Cell giveaway, that I was given. I did a lot of hiking in it in Southeast Alaska, where it sheltered me from the rain. I lost it one day while hiking in Hawaii when a gust of wind took it into the trees downhill from me.

I do have a lot of caps from different eras and different novelties. Except for Sox games, and the Sox might come to Oakland just once a year, so I don't get to many, I don't wear caps much anymore.

I bought a new Sox on field fitted hat when they came out back 07. Since then, it has literally been through rain, sleet and snow. It fits perfectly on my head and is so broken in. I love it.

I've got four available.

The goto is the current onfield cap. 5950, low crown. I wear it all the time, it's well broken in and has the sweat stains to prove its been used.

On occassion when my wife gets completely sick of looking at me in it, I trade it out for the Cooperstown 71-75...the "red cap", or the two seph mentioned in the original post: the '59 Go-Go-Sox cap, and the blue one from the twenties (?).

Mine is "Winning Ugly"-era cap that I've had since probably 1984. The adjustable kind with the mesh back.

On-field regulation cap. I think I've had mine since '08 and it's pretty beat up. I kind of prefer that it's worn, so that it's obvious I'm an actual Sox fan and not wearing it for fashion (I guess those are the breaks when your team has a badass logo).

I have so many it's sick. I wear them all. I have an '05 World Series one that doesn't fit anymore, that will get worn once maybe twice a year. The '59 one I think gets worn the most.

I have about 12 Sox caps in my closet, most of which are fitted but a few are the adjustable kind picked up at various game promotions. I pick one and wear it until the Sox lose a game that I attend, and then I retire it for the season and pick another one (I go to 14-16 games a season). For the 2012 season, I had a 7 game attendance winning streak with the current black cap, my longest streak ever. Other favorites are the early 70s red cap (wore that one on a Sunday last season where the Sox lost), the 1959 cap (have two versions of it) and the mid-1930s era logo (with the bat intertwined with the Sox logo). But I'll probably start 2013 off with that black cap .

I wore a lot of the 71-75 red fitted cap this year. The first Sox cap my Dad bought me was that style (circa 1972) so it will always be one of my favorites and is always "in the rotation".

I'm also a sucker for anything with the "winged sock" or "Flying Sock" logo - I have two different adjustable models, one black and one green.

I only have one, current style, New Era '47 Brand with the soft panels in the front. It's so worn and beaten up that it's essentially gray.

When it's cold at the Cell and I have my "moderate" winter jacket on, I go with the brown hat the Sox wore with their camo jerseys. It's the only hat that "matches" my coat and the boys have a pretty good record when I wear it.

I've got the green St. Pat's cap with the velcro adjustable strap in back that just fits like a glove. Only Sox cap I'll wear. Sweat stained as can be after about 12 years of wear but I can't think of any better hat out there.

Right now- its a Christmas White Sox hat- red cap, green S-O-X with green "button/eyelets" on the top, red "santa hat" sits on top of the S-O-X- and there's a small Santa Claus holding a baseball bat in the back.

Bought it at Grandstand a few years ago- its really well done- looked for a new one this year- but couldn't find one.

Outside of that- I have at least another dozen various White Sox hats I'll go to over the course of the year- and a very worn out Tucson Spring Training hat- that I wear at the gym.

I have a bunch, however I would say my "go to" cap is the Nike version of the current field cap. The underside of the bill is gray, which I like better than black, and it's adjustable. The crown is also lower which I like better than the "train conductor" crowns of the New Era mall caps. The Nike cap just fits my noggin' better.

My other favorite is the older BP cap with the gray bill.

The current hat which I bought in 1990. It's a little worn but it is a New Era official hat.

Black 39THIRTY with the regular Sox logo in white. Pretty much identical to the onfield 59FIFTY except mine is more comfortable. The only place that has them, that I know of is Dick's. Grandstands has a similar one but it looks slightly cheaper.

This year, I got a high quality '59 one like the one in the original post of this thread, but I like to rotate, and rarely wear the same hat to two games in a row. I've got a Leinenkugel-sponsored giveaway version of the mid-late 60s blue cap, a cheap adjustable version of the current design, a Culver's-sponsored giveaway of the 1983 cap, and an authentic version of the late 80s curly-C cap. Those are all the ones in the rotation, but I'm currently in love with the 1959 one.

I've got two: a fitted 1959 cap that I got as a Christmas present a couple of years ago, and a fitted 2005 World Series cap I bought at the ballpark gift shop the day of the WS parade in 2005.

The WS cap is my true go-to cap, though it's beginning to fade. Anybody know a no-risk way to clean it? It's a wool on-field cap and has shrunk slightly.

My son bought the '59 cap for me a half-size too big, anticipating shrinkage as happened with the 2005 cap. But the '59 cap isn't wool and hasn't shrunk, so we sewed some fabric in the headband to improve the fit. It becomes my go-to cap if the Sox have a string of losses when I wear the other cap.

Usually, it's the normal team cap I bought right after we won the '05 pennant. I still also wear my '05 World Series hat, but the bill is broken in several places, mainly due to me packing it away several times to move it to and from college. Those are just not big enough to endure that movement like most other caps.

I've gone between the 1959 cap and my 2006 green Sox hat( i like it because the Sox logo is white base with embossed dark green on top of it). No idea why the green one has gotten into the rotation of late.

They only wore it for a couple of years in the mid-20's, but it is still my favorite: dark blue cap with two crossed white socks, forming a "W".

My "go to" White Sox caps deserve a personal ranking....

#3 the '59 style
#2 the '69/'70 style (soft blue)

My #1 the '64-'68 style (navy blue)

All of 'em kinda give me that 'warm and fuzzy' feeling.

Go Sox!

I just bought the 59 and blue 64 hats. They are going to be my going to the park hats this year. I also wear the late 80's cursive C and the 83 hat a lot. Wear the black on occasion. That new BP hat with the silver rim is going in my collection once it comes out too. I've been looking for a silver bill hat for the Sox. I have the red version of the hat you got pictured above, I rarely wear it, it is american needle and 1931 on it. I looked it up, they were truly terrible that year. Also have 2 green fitted I never wear.

Probably because they were only worn for a few years and the preceded the current uniforms which are arguably the best uniforms in franchise history.

I also thought they were nice uniforms. Especially after they got rid of the numbers on the pant legs which were a carry over from the red, white and blue softball style uniforms.

Good thread. My go to hat is the '05 on field World Series cap, but it is real tight now from years of wear. Before that i wore the '77 fitted for years. Wore the '59 fitted on field cap a lot this past season. I have 16 different hats :o:

I only wear about three of them regularly. Can't get rid of any of them heh

Years ago, my go to cap was usually the on-field cap. However, after they changed the material from wool to the current synthetic material, it seems as though the New Era field caps don't fit as well. The 5150 caps sold in mall stores, New Era cap corner, etc. all seem to be more fashion-based with the high crown, etc. The older wool models, although they shrunk over time, seemed to fit my head better. I remember the original black cap in 1990. That was probably my all-time favorite and got years of use. Before that, the "C" cap and then before that the all Navy blue SOX cap from the Veck era. I never really warmed up to the Montreal Expos inspired red/white/blue caps.

Due to the changes in the 5150 caps, I now lean toward the batting practice caps as my go to caps. I like the way the stretch material fits my head and they have lower crowns.

My go-to is a green MLB Sox hat purchased in April of 2000. The previous one was a black MLB Sox hat purchased in June of 1999. After the Sox won in 2005, I finally washed it because it was nasty and it ruined the hat.
