"With all the hype centered around Jerome Williams, Boof Bonser, and Kurt Ainsworth, minor league enthusiasts may have overlooked several other promising young Giant hurlers. The most recent prospect hunter column focused on one of those players, Jesse Foppert, and this article features Felix Diaz who is yet another exciting young Dominican pitcher. Eric Threets, a flame throwing lefty, also deserves further attention as he tries to harness his 100+ mph fastball.

Diaz signed as a non-drafted free agent in March of 1998 and spent his first 2 years with the organization pitching in the Domincan summer league. His arsenal includes an effortless mid-90s fastball with movement, solid change, nasty curve, and hard slider. He displays good control and appears ready to challenge higher competition.

In 2000, the Giants sent Diaz to the rookie level Arizona League where he started 11 games and posted a 4.16 ERA, 63 IP, 56 H, 16 BB, and 58 SO. Last year, he was skipped over the short season Northwest League and assigned to Hagerstown in the South Atlantic League where he pitched in 15 games including 12 starts. Diaz was effective in his first full season of Low A ball with a 3.66 ERA, 52 IP, 49 H, 16 BB, 56 SO, until he was shutdown in June for precautionary reasons with a tender shoulder. He resumed throwing in the Arizona Fall League and dominated in 4 starts posting an impressive 2.40 ERA with 21 Ks in 15 IP.

With nagging injuires to Felix Rodriguez and Robb Nen, the Giants have used Diaz exclusively in relief this spring where he has gone 1-0 with a 2.25 ERA and nearly a K/IP. He has been used predominantly as a starter throughout his minor league career, but may be shifted to the bullpen to accelerate his decent towards the majors. Whether his role is as a starter or reliever, his future is bright. If Diaz can stay healthy, he is on the fast track to the majors."
