Good moves. Thigpen knows most of our pitchers already and Baines would probably be better utilized as a hitting coach/bench coach hybrid.

I've always maintained that a good first base coach should at least have been an average base stealer in his career.

I like this. Agreed that Baines will be better used elsewhere. Love him, love that he's with us, but first base seemed an odd fit.

Also like that two more Sox names are back in the fold. This is our family.

EDIT: Is there a source on this? Baggage claim?

I saw it as a Sox Facebook announcement.

Does Matt Thornton give up his #37 for Thiggy?

I would have thought a spanish speaking coach would have been brought in. Mark Salas , I believe is the only spanish speaking coach now on the staff.

Assistant hitting coach or assistant to the hitting coach?

Don't worry, Matt will get #37 back when he becomes our pitching coach in 2023.

No spanish, Salas is an american indian. Maybe he speaks spanish as a second language.

Wikipedia (the oracle from which all truth springs) says Salas is of Mexican descent. His nickname is "Chief" -- which is the likely source for your belief that his is a Native American. Salas is also a a palindrome. So he's got that going for him.

Always thought the organization should have took advantage of Baines' hitting knowledge. A guy that was so good in the clutch late in the game obviously has a lot to share.

Thigpen should be able to put his experience to good use, too.

Not sure about Boston. Nothing against the guy, but I agree that it would be nice to have a former base stealer at first. We had the perfect guy in Raines, but Guillen chased him away.

As far as our coaching going into 2013, I'm most concerned about how our in-game pitching decisions are handled. They got worse as the 2012 season progressed.

I disagree. Both moves look like organizational welfare for former players. It sure would be nice to see us hire qualified people from outside the organization.

I always thought Harold could nap better in the dugout anyway. Standing at first base must have really kept him up

Robin did just fine in his first year as Manager. If he has confidence in Thiggy and Boston that's good enough for me.

Thigpen as a BP coach looks like a very reasonable move. Isn't Daryl Boston a Kenny Williams guy? Even if that is the case, I don't have a problem with this Boston as the new first base coach.

If these are moves that Robin wants, meh.

Like the team, Ventura was bad down the stretch.
