Solid, solid move. Haren may not be what he used to be but I do this move 11 times out of 10.

Multiple sources on both sides of deal tell me that Marmol/Haren trade is not done.Discussions are progressing. Financials being worked out.

Both washed up IMO.

Haren made Mark Buehrle's Fastball look fast last season.

Haren might be the softest throwing RH in the game since Livan Hernandez.

Yeah, but getting a number 3 starter who can still deal for a overpriced relief pitcher is a great deal.

The fact that they got a serviceable starter for Marmol is a substantial improvement to their roster.

Probably a decent gamble. Marmol is useless on a team that will probably lose more than a 100 games next year, but they have money to burn and if Haren can overcome the arm troubles he's better than Dumpster and Maholm and they did/could've brought a lot better prospects than expected. They eat the cash to hope they can flip him for something better than Marmol could bring at the deadline.

With Haren's velocity it will be interesting to see just how "serviceable" he can be in that band box.

I have a friend who's thinking they'll re-sign Haren and make the Wild Catd game. Lot more to be done about the club though. Who thinks he'll be traded at the deadline?

Tell your friend to lay off the cubbie kool aid, even with Haren the Cubs are still not that good.

Haren is what, a #3 starter who will be a number 1 or 2 on the Cubs?

Probably more useful than Marmol but this trade is hardly anything worth getting excited about.

Interesting trade...Cubs deal a head case for a guy who is injury prone.

Since when did the Cubs change their name to the Chicago Theos? All I'm seeing out of cubs fans is "Great job Theo!" "Go Theo!"

And now trade is off. Wonder who backed out.

Haren mentioned that death was an option.

Clearly you've been reading WSI since Theo was inaugurated with the Cubbies job.

WSI used to have the FOBB (Friends Of Billy Beane) we now need FOTE (Friends Of Theo Epstein).

Haren is in severe decline. Marmol is too unreliable to close for a contending team like the Angels.

Cub fans probably still think Haren is good. I don't think this deal would make sense for either side.

Maybe the Angels figured they'd be better off just declining Haren's option instead of getting back Marmol.

It really doesn't. What do the rebuilding Cubs want with a declining veteran and what does LA want with a ****ty reliever?

The Cubs can sign that declining veteran on their own now!

So is this deal dead? I couldn't believe someone would give up Haren for Carlos Marmol.

Yes, the Angels just declined the 2013 option on Haren's contract, instead of trading him for Marmol.

Source: Marmol would have OK'ed trade to #Angels (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Angels&src=hash), but #Cubs (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23Cubs&src=hash) pulled deal off table and trade is not happening. Angels talking to other clubs.

Supposedly Red Sox are very interested in Haren.

There is an assumption among executives that Haren failed a physical.

Wouldn't be surprising... Here's Haren's fastball the last 6 years:

Marmol could easily be a "coop will fix em" type with his arm. He doesn't have to close. Decent chance with little risk - slow pitching past his prime starter.
