On paper I think Oakland got the best part of this deal but you never know, a change of scenery might really help Bell. Arizona also re-upped Putz today so they are trying to get their bullpen in order first.

Good thing the Giants won last night. Otherwise, Bell would have had to wait another two weeks to get his freedom from Loria and Ozzie.

How would that have affected this trade? No major moves during the World Series?

MLB wants the World Series to be the only news during the World Series. No trades, no contract extensions, nobody fired. Of course, that did not stop the always self-sacrificing A-Rod from signing a major contract extension during the World Series a few years ago (it was a non-Yankee World Series).

Actually, A-Roid announced he was opting out of the final three years of his contract. It came a few hours before the Red Sox won game four to sweep the Rockies. MLB wasn't pleased, but there was nothing they could do.

I wonder if Bells trade means that Ozzie is staying in Miami.

I wonder if Bells trade means that Ozzie is staying in Miami.

Possibly, but IMO it's more for baseball/financial reasons. That was a bad contract the day they signed it, and worse considering how Bell imploded this season.

That said, I'd be very surprised if Loria pays Ozzie for 3 years to sit at home.

I do expect the Marlins to do better next year, especially if Beinfest adjusts the roster for the realities of the new park.

Regardless of whether Ozzie stays or not I think that Heath Bell had to go. Heath Bell might have been the only person in the Marlins clubhouse who was more unpopular than Ozzie.
