If the Sox were playing competently, I think they might have. The Tigers winning both games so far hasn't surprised me. The 2-3 setup of the LDS this year has been really advantageous for them as it would have been for us.

Yeah, the latter is awful but it's just temporary (and was actually used for a while for the LCS in the 80s)...

Unbelievable that the Giants are going to force Game 5 after being absolutely dead in the water coming out of San Francisco. Only 4 runs in the first 3 games, and "explode" for 8 today.

Nats have got to find an answer, because they've been hammered in this series by the Cards. Good pitching only gets you so far. The Nats are somehow hitting .257 as a team, but only have scored 7 runs.

The Nats had a pretty good offense in the regular season; the Cardinals only outscored them by 34 total runs. Guess they've just gone cold at the wrong time, and/or Cardinal pitching has been surprisingly strong.

Hell, we GOT Wise back, and everyone was all up in arms. This despite filling in more than adequately for De Aza when he was hurt. He wasn't grossly overused like he was with Ozzie. Yet, from hearing the reaction of certain people on here, you'd think he was the sole reason we lost the division.

What is interesting to me is that their regulars didn't necessarily play as much as the Sox did. More l/r matchups? Or did they just rest their players more? Or were their older veterans hurt more?

Two great American League playoff games tonight. That's what baseball is all about right there.

I've give props to Girardi. Not every manager would have the stones to pinch hit for a player with 647 career home runs and a $29 million per year salary. But even if Ibanez had popped out to the second baseman, it was a great move by the Yankee manager. A-Rod sucks right now. He would have had no chance against Johnson, so you try somebody else. It came up aces for New York. Heartbreak for Baltimore and its fans. The Orioles were two outs away from being in the driver's seat.

And, yeah, screw Valverde. When the inning started, I was thinking, "Somebody get on for Smith." That guy just seemed like he would match up well with Valverde, who was excessively reliant on his fastball for some reason. Huge hit by Smith to tie the game, then an even bigger hit by Crisp with two outs.

So much at stake and to do it like that....amazing. The few tiger fans, after foolishly gloating all game, sheepishly sneak out after Coco's hit. The A's fans stayed around and were basically screaming and partying for 25 minutes afterwards. They nearly tore the place to the ground...

I've been to a few walk-off Sox losses at the park in Oakland, whatever they were calling it at the time. The crowds were small, but even then it was tough, walking out of the ballpark, waiting for and riding the BART with all those celebrating A's fans. In mid September, I was pondering the possibility of going to Sox postseason games in Oakland, and the thought of what happened to the Tigers last night was the first thing that crossed my mind.

Not that I feel bad for Tigers fans. The Tigers are higher up on my hate list than the A's at the moment, and watching their fans suffer is pleasurable.

MLB has struck gold so far this postseason.

All they need is for the Nats and O's to win today, and you have 20 postseason games out of a possible 20!

I love game 5' s or game 7's....

Really pulling for the A's to beat Verlander...not easy..you just know that Verlander will throw 150 pitches if necessary, but would love to see if Leyland will go back to El Douche today with a one run lead.

Feel bad for the O's. Incredible season of no walkoff losses ends at the worst possible time. Must bounce back today.

I was planning on listening to the SF/Cincy game today during work but as soon as I heard Berman's voice, I had to turn it off. I can't believe that turd is doing radio broadcasts too. Ugh.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I had some errands to run so I thought I'd listen to a game a bit in the car...and then I heard Berman and changed the station.

TBS showed a graphic where Dusty has had three teams that are a win away from advancing to the next round of the playoffs and they have all choked. Looks like this year's team will be no different. Of course losing Cueto hurt a lot but so did that attempted double steal back in the sixth.

thomas35forever

Excluding Tigers and Yankees fans, I think nearly everyone is cheering for that match up.

The Reds are falling apart. Buster Posey just hit a grand slam and now it's 6-0 Giants. And all they had to do was win 1 game at home. Baseball is a crazy sport.
What was the last playoff series to feature zero wins by the home team?

Damn. I was hoping the Reds would win the whole thing this year. What is the deal with Baker's clubs and their inability to finish teams off? Any guy that manages for a long time and gets in the playoffs a lot will probably have it happen sooner or later but he doesn't have a World Series ring (as a manager) that would help him refute the "choker" label that's sure to begin to float around out there.

Ironically as the Nats-bashers were out in the media full force after Games 2 & 3 cause of the Strasburg thing, the guy who replaced him in the rotation tosses a gem today to give the team a chance, even with a struggling offense.

Verlander was unbeatable with Wally Bell's generous strike zone on outside pitches to leftys against a lefty dominant A's team. Verlander could strike guys out looking without throwing a single pitch in the strike zone....amazingly perfect setup for Verlander ..thanks to Bell.

I do not give a crap if he was consistent...a strike is a strike and a ball is a ball. Parker was pitching to mainly rightys in the tigers lineup and was not getting that pitch outside to rightys....huge edge to Verlander.

Verlander was smart, and kept milking the edge that Bell handed him.

I guess that doctors ordered the Nationals to be shut down after playing 8 and 2/3rds.

Lol!

After living in Peoria for 3 years in Peoria, I grew to hate the Cardinals and Cardinal fans. Tonight just pissed me off. The teams I wanted to win in each series lost. I don't really like any team left.

So you're telling us you used to live in Peoria?

Anybody but the Yankees.
You and me both. The two teams I wanted to see move on both died tonight. The best record in baseball falls to a wild card team. What is the world coming to?

You can say that again. These playoffs have been terrific.

Luck is the residue of good design. The Cardinals have an offensive approach that wins in the playoffs. So do the Giants.

Even though I'm an American League guy to the core -- and I believe the American League is a deeper league overall -- I think the two remaining NL teams have fewer flaws than the two remaining AL clubs.

There is no "brotherhood" between Sox and Cardinals fans. They hate the Sox too just as much as the Cubs, they don't like anything Chicago.
From my experience, they don't hate us anywhere near as much as they hate the cubs. In fact, they don't even hate us, it's just indifference.

Ditto. Most I know are happy to passively cheer for the Sox if they are watching a game.

Nats' team ERA in the NLDS was 6.14. If only they had an ace-type, superstar pitcher somewhere...

The post season has been great so far .. i really wanted the Orioles and A's to meet in the next round, but oh well .. unlike just about everyone on here, i don't hate the Tigers .. if the White Sox hadn't crashed at the end of the season, no one would have even given them a second thought .. i grew up rooting for whatever team won our league or division, so it's difficult for me to change .. i don't even hate the Yankees, im just bored watching them .. they are on the national broadcasts 2 or 3 times a week, all season long, and in the playoffs damn near every year .. i wish they would just go away and leave me alone lol .. i also don't hate the Cardinals, since i don't watch enough NL baseball to hate a team from that league, and i've always liked the fact that St. Louis is a baseball first town .. i suppose i'm envious of that fact, as i have lost interest in every other sport save baseball .. i'm not all that excited about watching the Tigers and Yankees, but it will be hard to stay away ..

I hope I'm wrong but the Nats seem poised to gag this game away; they seemed a little overly celebratory during the early earnings when they were banging the ball out of the park but the Cards never give up. You called it.

The Tigers are going to make the WS and might win it (I'd favor them).
Arrrrrggggggg.
They got the big time favorable draw with Texas clowning the last 3 weeks.

As for the Cardinals, I'm really tired of them, but damn they fight.

As for the Cardinals, I'm really tired of them, but damn they fight. I hope our hitters could have watched the Cardinals hitters last night. Nobody tried to do too much. Just wait on your pitch and drive it. Chip away a little at a time and you could see the building enthusiasm in the dugout. I'm not a Cardinals fan but it was a beautiful thing to behold. What a great series and I'd have to say the playoffs so far have been a real positive for MLB.

The Cardinals are simply "solid" and I say that with great respect. They get guys out of the minor league system that produce, they sign good solid free agents who don't do more than they are capable of doing and they have a good front office...not flashy, you won't read a lot of comments from them in the papers...all they do is play the game the right way and win.

As far as Detroit, they have three superstars. Three guys among the highest paid players in the game each of whom can literally carry a team to victory. That's a tough combination to beat. And Scherzer is close to joining that group of three with his ability to dominate.

Dombrowski (who grew up a Sox fan) had built a farm system the envy of baseball in Montreal and showed with a big budget he can win with Florida and Detroit. He's a damn fine G.M. (and to think Hawk fired him because he was a Hemond / Veeck hire...)

Amazing comeback....not a fan of the Cards but much respect to them.

The Cardinals are my second favorite team, behind the Sox so I am one happy Cardinals fan right now!:bandance: I just wish the Sox performed as well under pressure as the Cardinals do. Complete opposites in that regard.

And the Cardinals have two top prospects who will likely be with the big club next season. 21-year old pitcher Shelby Miller replaced injured SP Jaime Garcia on the NLDS roster, which I think carries over to the NLCS. Miller was rated the #8 prospect in baseball prior to the 2012 season. 20-year old OF Oscar Tavares was #40, and he had a great full season in AA: .321/.380/.572, with 23 HRs and 94 RsBI (and 67 extra base hits in just 124 games).

Absolutely. Alexei Ramirez is the antithesis of that idea.

Ironically the guy who replaced Strasburg had the only outstanding game as a starter for them in the series.
