Got him in the side of the head and he walked off, but wow...

The way he kind of flopped around on the ground for a moment was pretty scary, but I'm glad to see that he never lost consciousness and that he's OK.

That sound of it hitting him - ugh. Reminds me of Marlon Byrd getting hit at Fenway. Not a sound you want to hear.

That was horrifying to see. Glad that he was able to get up from that.

He has had a cloud over him since the day he left here. Probably could use a little good luck.

Wow, so glad to see him walk off of the field. I pray he is okay with no complications.

Buehrle would have caught it and turned a triple play. Even if there were no runners on base.

Jeff Passan ‏@JeffPassan (https://twitter.com/JeffPassan) A's pitcher Brandon McCarthy underwent a two-hour surgery last night for epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture, team says.

When he walked off I had no idea he would be undergoing surgery that night. Scary stuff and I hope he's okay.

Buehrle would have caught it and turned a triple play. Even if there were no runners on base.

But McCarthy didn't catch the ball. Instead he had a two hour surgery for a skull fracture and a brain contusion.

Great joke, though!

“Our first concern is Brandon’s health, and we are heartened to learn he has shown progress in his recovery after surgery,” said Billy Beane, the A’s vice president and general manager. “We are glad to report he is stable, awake and alert. "

Scary, scary. Perspective and everything else that matters comes to mind. Get well soon Brandon!

Brandon McCarthy had two-hour surgery to relieve epidural hemorrhage, brain contusion and skull fracture. He is alert, resting comfortably.

Wow. Glad to hear those words from Billy Beane. Hopefully that means he'll have a safe, speedy recovery.

I always really liked McCarthy when he was with the Sox.

Just read about this, how awful.

Thank God doctors did the right thing to cut him open. Too many times people walk away from head injuries to later have regret.

Wow, I hope he recovers quickly. That was nasty.

Weird how that trade has come full circle and now BMac (yes I said it), is the guy you'd rather have now that the contract Danks has is absurd.

This isn't funny. Still have a soft spot in my heart for Brandon. Cubs Mitch Williams being hit in the ear and pitching again 3 days later because his ear cushioned the blow was funny.

Let's make fun of a guy that just suffered a significant brain injury. Strong work.

Glad to hear the surgery appears to be a success. I hope Brandon makes a rapid and complete recovery.

In Dump's defense, that information was not available until a post 30 minutes after he made his post. Up to that moment it looked like Brandon got really lucky. It isn't or wasn't contained in the article when I posted it this afternoon.

I was afraid of the brain bleed when I saw that, that was a vicious line shot. They were immediately on top of it, so fingers crossed that the damage was minimized by prompt surgery and that recovery will be complete.

When they juiced up the ball to increase HR totals they also made the pitching mound a very dangerous place to make a living, seems like its an epidemic right now with pitchers getting nailed.

Makes one wonder if MLB will make helmets mandatory for pitchers soon. Hope he will be just fine

I don't think you mean the trade has "come full circle." Although I don't agree that it's done a 180 either.

Maple bats? Another reason to ban them.

Maple bats? Another reason to ban them. They break easily and then are like a high speed stiletto with the potential to cause great harm. I guess hitters like them because they think they'll be quicker in the hitting zone. It seems like everyone uses them. The Nellie Fox bottle bat and the big stick that Dick Allen used are gone.

Not one team would take Danks for a bag of balls right now with that horrible contract and his health. I'm not sure why you are arguing my point.

Well given he was pitching hurt this season and has been excellent in years past, I can't understand why anyone is willing to pass judgment on him at this time. If his injury ends up being career threatening, then the insurance will pay the contract anyway, if not, then hopefully he comes back next year and pitches like he has in years past and everything is fine. Guess we'll find out...

I guess it was more the tone of the post that got me. "Defend Danks..." Does Danks require defending?

Hope that Brandon continues to recover and can get back to a more normal level of health.

That trade was still a good trade. We don't make the playoffs in '08 or contend in 2010 without Danks. Danks' contract extension could be up for a bit of debate as he hasn't really turned the corner but I think he would have gotten a similar deal if he had been allowed to hit the market.

The A's have released a statement saying that while his condition has improved it is still "life threatening."

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8350276/brandon-mccarthy-oakland-athletics-life-threatening-situation

I am sure I am just reiterating what others have said but when I saw he walked off the mound under his own power I thought he had "ONLY" a concussion. I was stunned when I saw he had emergency brain surgery. I really hope he comes through this okay.
