It isn't a regular occurrence. But, one team has already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention before September began. We can use this thread to track the teams as they get mathematically eliminated from playoff contention (both division and wild card races).

Teams eliminated from playoff contention:

Houston Astros

New York Mets
Miami Marlins
Colorado Rockies

All NL teams so far. Maybe evidence that the AL is much tighter this year.

5 of those 8 teams either haven't ever won a World Series or haven't won one since 1948. I hope this season doesn't continue to be a microcosm of baseball history, or else we know who's going to be on top in the end.

I'm not too concerned about what went down in 1950 having a major implication on the 2012 season.

Why? How does another disappointed fan base make our situation any better?

No, that was a good story and it ends up in disappointment. Would have been cool to see them there.

Yea, I feel bad for Pittsburgh. I really want to see that organization right the ship and become a force in the NL Central. Plus it would be great to see the Pirates start winning pennants before the Cubs come close to sniffing contention.

I would love to see that if for no other reason than to read Morrissey's and Telander's reactions. That would be gold.

Jumping in here with the hope that helping bury our team will help me get over it faster. Doubtful. :whiner:

With wins by Oakland and Detroit, the AL teams are all set, seeding is all that remains to be determined with Tigers locking down the #3 seed.

In the NL the Dodgers can force a game 163 with 2 wins and 2 losses by the Cards. San Francisco is the #3 seed and Atlanta will be hosting the wild card playoff matchup as the #4 seed.
