I don't get it.

I mean, I get that the Orioles are struggling to hold onto 2nd place and maintain themselves in the wild card race, but this moves reeks of a team that's a bit too desperate.

Throwing a 20-year old who was hitting .266/.350/.431 in AA into the thick of a pennant race does not seem like a good idea in the long run.

They will also be playing him out of position at 3B; 203 of his 208 games as a pro have come at SS. But JJ Hardy is doing fine for the O's there, so Machado will man the hot corner.

I don't like it either. But you need to understand their perspective. The franchise has been bumbling around since the Jeffrey Maier game. That was 1996.

It's close to a generation, with digital advancement and all. Even if they get eliminated in late September, that will raise their season tickets for 2013 and credibility around the league.

Hell, I think them eliminating Boston on the last day in 2011 helped spring them forward.

If Machado struggles for the remainder of this season, then you can start him in AA next spring. He gets a taste of major league contention. Cross the fingers.
