I saw in another thread the mention that Mike passed away and checked on it. Unfortunately it's true, he died on July 1st after a brief illness at 72.

I had just gotten back from traveling all day from Chicago the night before and somehow missed it.

I've very saddened by this news, having had the chance to interview Mike and talk with him now and again. Just a very nice guy and he kept tabs on the Sox right to the end.

Here is the story in his hometown (Massillon, Ohio Tigers) newspaper on his death:

and here is the link to my interview with Mike for White Sox Interactive:

Very sad news. He was a solid player on some very, very good Sox teams of the 1960's.

Great defensive right fielder. When he played w Jim Landis, the White Sox certainly covered center and right but Dave Nicholson was in left one or two of those years and he couldn't catch a cold

In the summer of 1964 when I was 14 four White Sox players appeared at Jim Graham Oldsmobile in Joliet to sign autographed pictures. They were Hoyt Wilhelm, Eddie Fisher, Ron Hansen and Mike Hershberger. I had been very upset the previous winter when the Sox had traded my all time favorite, Nellie Fox, to Houston. I was wearing a Colt 45's baseball cap when I approached Mike for his autograph. He saw my hat and said "Colt 45's? What's that about?" My mom told him that I was following the team because Nellie had gotten traded. He said "Well, if you have to follow another team then Nellie's a good reason". RIP Mike.

He had a great arm also.
RIP Mike.

Another excellent defensive player who played for the White Sox. He was in the same class as Ken Berry, Jim Landis, Jim Rivera, among others. Sorry to see him pass.I remember Casey Stengel saying his definition of the White Sox was great pitching, large gloves and small bats.

Mike Hershberger made the best throw from the outfield I ever saw in my life. He picked up the ball at the wall and threw a bullet to home plate to nail the runner..... unfortunately the ump called him safe.
