One reason for the Sox' salary purge is to be in position to re-sign Konerko when he becomes eligible for arbitration after this season.

If Konerko signed the extension he wanted - PK said just years, no additional money was wanted - would that make him ineligible for arbitration? I was just wondering because if it would make him ineligible, KW missed the boat when he could have signd him at the same salary for a 2 or 3 year extension (this is all saying we can take PK at his word).

I douby JR will increase next year's payroll, ~ $50mil.
They may be thinking of avoiding arbitration and signing PK to a long term contract as they did Maggs. The money to sign PK will come from the $$ it would cost to resign Ray, > $6mil.

I can agree with that. I'd rather get rid of durHAM and his demands for 8 million a year if it means keeping an outstanding player like Konerko.
