Sox send Durham to A's

July 25, 2002, 6:12 PM CDT

The White Sox traded second baseman Ray Durham to the Oakland A's Thursday for minor league pitcher Jon Adkins and cash.

Adkins, a 24-year-old right-hander, is 7-6 with a 6.03 ERA for Class AAA Sacramento.

Durham, 30, is hitting .299 (103-345) with nine home runs, 48 RBI and 71 runs scored in 96 games this season. He played for the Sox for eight seasons.

Hope they got a lot of cash out of that.

Doesn't exactly sound like that good of a deal. I think Durham had a tad more value then a guy with an era of 6.

Can anyone expect that KW would beat Billy Beane in a trade?

Hopefully this guy they traded for has some value. It doesn't appear too good though.

We might have gotten a good minor leaguer, better then getting nothing

though this is unconfirmed I don't like the idea of kenny dealing with beane!

I mean billy will take kenny to the cleaners

a telephone conversation between kenny and billy

billy - kenny i need cheap talent that has upside

kenny- I can't give that my owner is also cheap

billy- (now invoking his jedi mind powers) garland, and burele these aren't the pitchers you need!

kenny- yes don't you need durham to

Billy- why yes, while you know you want, jeff tam and mike holtz, and david Justice

kenny - sounds like a good deal!

billy - I knew you'd like it

just rember that jedi mind trick work well on the weak minded!

Knowing the Sox they'll call up Malone!

This is the time to move Jose to 2nd for Joe.

It's better than having him get taken by Evans. Then again what real choice does he have? If Williams can't get what he is asking for does he say: "Oh yeah? Well will just hold onto him and risk getting nothing in return. So take that Beane!"

Well here's the KW scouting report:

“In Adkins, we are getting a young pitcher with a live, quick power arm,” said Williams. “Our scouts like his aggressiveness and his ability to go after hitters. He has a plus fastball with good life that can reach 94-95 mph. Along with his above-average slider, he has the potential for success either as a setup man or at the back of our rotation in the not-too-distant future.”

Again, KW proves that he is indeed the most incompetent GM in the history of the game. It's truly sad when you get cash and a minor league pitcher with a 6+ era for a starter. Sorry Hawk, the title of worst GM has been officially stolen.

It's already on WhiteSox.com Ray was traded to the A's for a righthanded pitcher named Jon Adkins 24 years old the A's also get cash.
God Help K.W. If This Is Another L.A. Dodgers - Barry/Berry mess up.
Besides that Ray was the only Sox player hitting , K.W. better bring Willie Harris up and this guy Adkins better turn out to be something.
Go White Sox

So Yes and No, KW says it's an opprotunity for Willie to play 2nd, but he's not officially re-called. Also wasn't he gonna try to play Center, with Hummel going back to second and Jimenez playing short? I'm so confused :?:

The Sox are the ones getting the cash. Music to the chairmans' ears.

Thomas has been hitting as of late to.

Harris is on the way:
"The decision to trade Ray was not an easy one," Chicago general manager Ken Williams said. "Ray has been a part of our family since 1990 and we have helped him grow into an All-Star-caliber second baseman. However, in moving him, we not only pick up a quality arm in Adkins, but we also are afforded the opportunity to see Willie Harris play regularly at the major league level."

That would seem to be the plan. We'll see what happens tomorrow. Maybe Lofton and Clayton will be moved as well.

The Sox are confused to Cali, your not alone.

I know nothing about Jon Adkins. Someone (Randar, Vic,etc.) please tell us something good about this guy. Right now Im disgusted. I would have rather seen the Sox take a chance and let Ray walk, and hope that they can still get some compensatory picks.

I can't wait until tomorrow when we hear that Mags has been traded for a twelver and a bag of chips to be named later.

Everyone: "Again, we have to ask the question, Did you actually put any thought into this trade at all"?

kenny: "The decision to trade mags was not an easy one, but I was thirsty and the beer was reported to be cold. In addition, I will be able to call up the bag of chips and I hope they will be delicious".

1. Possible that the whole draft picks thing could be wiped out.
2. They have to offer him something to get the picks. If he were to return, all your doing is stunting the growth of Harris or Hummel.

The consensus is with the change in the amatuer draft, the teams may longer get compensatory picks for FA's walking.

I know that the picks might be wiped out, thats why I said "take a chance, and hope". Im just completely pissed right now. Im sick of KW Jr. making bad trades. We heard names like Furcal, Lidle being tossed around in trade talks for Durham, and what do we get? A 24 year old prospect with an ERA that could end up challenging Parque's. And Im sick of not being able to do anything about it.

A compensation pick, which will probably be grandfathered out, as was discussed today, would be just as bad if Williams picked it.

Word up, LDF! Make Durham a token offer next winter and let him walk. We can't do any worse with a compensation pick than the pile of garbage KW just got--plus we're paying Durham's salary?

This has got to be a joke!

As a veteran Ray has the right to forego FA and file for arbitration, ala Barry Bonds and Brett Boone.

Who cares if Frank was pissed about Chris "errors" singleton leaving or this deal. He just needs to concentrate on keeping this little streak hes bee on going and not whine like the baby he is.
Basically we didnt get much at all with this pitcher but this deal does make sense because our season is over. This will be a good time to see how Harris can play at the major league level and get crede a shot too. I really dont think whoever gets the shot at second can be as bad at defense as ray was this year.

I don't disagree that moving Durham and giving Harris a shot is a decent idea, particularly if they have no plans on trying to retain Durham next year. But that doesn't mean you just Ray away for a guy who, at least according to his stats, sucks. If Billy Beane or Brian Cashman or Dave Dombrowski was trading Ray Durham, I promise you they would have received more. I know Ray is a rent-a-player, but for Pete's sake, a AAA pitcher with an ERA over 6.00?? :chunks
