Several of us have been bitching up a storm about Will Ohman being allowed to face right-handed batters in high-leverage situations. I decided to look up the numbers to see how justified we are in our complaints.

Career splits
vs. Lefties: .211/.295/.344
vs. Righties: .269/.359/.423

2012
vs. Lefties: .172/.250/.172
vs. Righties: .350/.409/.800

All three home runs Ohman has allowed this season have been to right-handed hitters. (Two to Shelley Duncan, one to Austin Jackson)

The numbers really do suggest he should only be used as a left-handed specialist. Some WSIers believe Ohman should be released. I disagree. He's useful when used properly. Right now, he's not being used properly.

Seems like a problem they've had throughout the bullpen.

He's a situational lefty. That's what he's always been. Not sure why Cooper/Ventural think otherwise.

He shouldn't be released (although his numbers against lefties aren't elite either).
Now Fukudome on the other hand....

They look pretty damn good to me.

It seems like Ohman enters the game at a point (6th or 7th inning) when Coop or RV are reluctant to use him for only one lefthanded hitter (when there is a righty on deck). Now that Santiago is no longer the closer, the Sox have three lefties they can go to before the 9th inning. There really is no excuse for letting Ohman face a right handed hitter.

A few years back in an interview (I think it was with Ranger) I remember Cooper saying something to the effect that he doesn't believe in LOOGYs and ROOGYs: he wants people in the bullpen that can pitch. At first, I thought that he was just playing lip service or something...but now I'm starting to think that he actually believes that.

There's nothing wrong with that idea, you just need to tailor it to the individual pitcher. Some left handers can be sent out there to face a tough right handed hitter. In Ohman's case it's not a good idea for him to face anyone batting from the right side at this point.

Unfortunately, Ohman can't pitch to right handed batters, other than batting practice.

Remember when he was in the mix for the closers job because he'd thrown some scoreless innings in March? Ha. Funny.

Um, he has been throwing batting practice..!!

And with the unfortunate death of Kevin Hickey, we now have an opening for Ohman.

Early in the season, it seemed Robin was doing the LOOGY/ROOGY trick a lot, and that got us in trouble. Now, he seems to be leaving them in there one or two batters too long, and that's getting us in trouble as well.

This is true. And it is the manager's job to make sure he isn't asking players to do something they can't do.

Asking Ohman to get out right-handed hitters is an example of asking a guy to do something he can't do. It's lost the Sox a game or two this year.

I remember some other manager doing that with bunting constantly...
