When I was a kid, I picked the Mets as my second favorite team. 1986 was a blast, I was so excited.

RIP, kid.

"I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 pm. This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know. He is in heaven and has reunited with his mom and dad. I believe with all my heart that dad had a STANDING OVATION as he walked through the gates of heaven to be with Jesus."

:rip:

I am still in Montreal and his death is hitting the city hard. Montreal loved Nos Amours but bad ownership and Selig didn't love the city back.

Listen to the ovation Carter got in 2005.

I remember being a little kid and asking my Mom to buy Hostess Crumb Cakes - which I didn't like - just because Gary Carter's card with the Expos was one of the three on the bottom of the box.

One of my favorite players with the Expos and the Mets.

My prayers go out to his family and friends. RIP, Gary. Thanks.

I'd imagine Daver loved watching the guy behind the plate. He's a guy who my uncle always wanted me to mimic when I was learning to wear the tools of ignorance. Few, if any, pop and fire like him these days.

That clip proves how much Montreal loved the team - then came the strike and fire sale. :whiner:

41,800 was the crowd that afternoon.

MONTREAL - Like many Montrealers of my generation, my first baseball hero was Rusty Staub.

My second was Gary Carter.

It has been interesting listening and watching the extensive coverage in Montréal tonight on Carter's death. The city is very sad.

Montréal has always gotten a bad wrap as a baseball town but it was never because the fans didn't care.

The Expos fanbase was always strongest on what is called the West Island which were the core of Anglophone suburbs. The original owner was Anglo and he never went after the Francophone audience ( but the French fans did slowly support the team ). Keep in mind Montreal was split 50-50 between English and French in 1969. The disastrous Olympics of 1976 caused the Parti Québécois (PQ) to assume power and they declared war on all things English. That prompted the great exodus to Ontario (Toronto) which Montréal has never recovered from.

Stade Olympic was located on the east end of the city and very difficult for the West Island fans to get to. Think being in Beverly and the White Sox moving to Rogers Park.

The last ten years the fans watched sadly knowing the team would be moved and there was nothing they could do to save it.

Montréal did not fail baseball - Baseball failed Montréal

Same clip - I didn't realize the Sox connection here, but he was replaced by pinch runner Tim Laker.

Also, some some speculation on another board that Dawson took a bad route and "short-armed" the catch in right field so his old Expo buddy could have a nice ending. Not sure about the short-arm, but he definitely didn't go straight back on the ball off the bat.

Cool moment.

Just watching that clip, you just realize how baseball could have never worked in Montreal. Clearly nobody there cared.

The fans were very bitter ( and heartbroken ) because of 1994 and then the new owner decided he could make more money gutting the payroll and collecting revenue sharing.

The mid 90's the Canadian dollar had tanked. I can remember in 1995 the Peel Pub was offering a 50% exchange on US ( $100 = $150 CDN ) - The team was paying payroll in USD's and revenue was in CDN. That is why the 2 hockey teams moved to the US ( and the Vancouver NBA team later )

Claude Brochu was the bad owner - Loria actually at first thought he could turn it around but when Lucien Bouchard who was the Quebec Premier asked Selig to fly to Quebec City and then REFUSED to see him that angered Bud.

Brochu tried to build a park without provincial or city help but Bouchard told the francophone business community not to support any plan that would help American baseball.

Parc Labatt would have been wonderful.

When the Habs took the ice in the pre-game they were all wearing the number 8 as the organist played the Expos theme song.
