The White Sox have signed Dan Johnson to a minor league deal. I figured this was worthy of the clubhouse because Johnson has appeared the majors a fair amount in recent years with the Rays and A's.

He struggled in 2011, but you may remember him for the 3 run dagger home run he hit against the SOX in the 9th inning off Thornton early last season. It was one of his two home runs on the season in the majors.

Johnson did hit 37 home runs and drove in 120 between AAA and the majors in 2010. He battled some wrist injuries last season.

I like the signing, especially if Dunn cannot figure it out.

Wasn't his other on the last day of the season to send the Rays-Yankees into extras?

Jared Mitchell still has a ton of tools and talent despite his sub-par return last year after his 2010 injury. I would imagine Mitchell could still find himself in the mix if De Aza or Viciedo don't pan out especially if he rebounds this season in Charlotte.

I was reading the MLBTR boards and the Rays fans there love the guy. Apparently, he also hit some big HRs for them in 2008 as well. I wonder if he could make the team as a backup 1B? Not sure if they would waste the roster spot since Dunn can also play the position even though his defense is terrible.

Don't look for Mitchell in Charlotte this year. I hear they want to push him to Birmingham, but I'd be all for him seeing some pitches in Winston-Salem for a month to start the year.

Darryl Boston was not very positive about Mitchell when he was on The Score last weekend.

Jared Mitchell has a long way to go with the bat. .222/.304/.389 in Winston Salem last year.

Ever heard of depth? It is important to have, especially when your minor league system sucks. I like the signing in the sense that if Dunn hits anything like he did in 2011, we have a guy down in Charlotte that has some significant power and major league experience. It was a solid move with zero risk.

It was a solid move with zero risk.I'm all for depth, and I guess Johnson probably has more upside than anybody the Sox could dig up internally, but that's really about it. I wouldn't want to count on Johnson to be any better than Dunn, even if Dunn is poor again.

Dan Johnson is nothing but Charlotte fodder. Anyone that thinks Jared Mitchell is even remotely close to making an impact with the White Sox hasn't been paying much attention.

I would count on Dan Johnson to be better than Dallas McPherson which was the organization's only other power 1B with MLB experience. I think this was the entire point of the signing. What if the Sox are somehow in contention next season and Paulie tweaks something and has to go to the 15 day DL? It would be nice to have a veteran to step in and not completely suck. It certainly isn't a major signing but definitely a depth move as KcMcMahon pointed out.

Johnson also has very limited time at 3B in the majors too. I'm sure he's about the same if not worse in fielding than McPherson, but he may actually have an outside chance for that backup corner INF spot.

Here is an article on our new potential backup 1B. Sounds like he has had a lot of bad luck and obstacles getting a regular job in MLB. I wish him the best of luck:

He won't have to worry about having a chance to repeat his two heroic moments from 2011:

One, he is with the White Sox organization now, so he can't pull that April thrill against them again.

Two, there will be no potential game-tying moment pushing his team to a playoff berth for him to play in.

I always thought this guy would be better than he has shown, but much like Casey Kotchman he just never seemed to be able to put it all together.

No.

Considering every major leaguer in major league history did better than Dunn did last year, I find that hard to believe.

If Dan Johnson sees any significant playing time with the White Sox in 2012, then that would be sad.

In that case, get ready for a sad 2012. When the organization generates just about zero of its own MLB talent and has Dunn and Rios locked up for 3 more years, get ready to see more Dan Johnsons of the world getting significant play time on the South Side.

One bad season out of eleven doesn't sum up his career. Adam Dunn is going to be fine.

That only accounts for every other player in Major League history who had as many plate appearances as Dunn. Johnson's 2011 was .119/.187/.202. In fact, he hasn't hit above .200 in a MLB season since 2007 when he hit a robust .236 for the A's.
