Tigers announced that Victor Martinez, all star catcher ,tore his ACL in winter conditioning and will miss the 2012 season.

Hate to see it,but it might be the most positive news regarding the Sox getting closer to the Tigers all offseason. Martinez was a monster last year, and will be missed.

Wow. That really hurts Detroit. Any chance they go after Fielder now?

That just puts the Tigers in a better position to compete with us.

If he has surgery he will likely miss the 2012 season. Tough break for the Kitties.

Nice break for the SOX. As I have been saying all offseason, the AL Central is widddddeee open. KW, please only move Gavin if someone wants to grossly overpay.

This may increase the Tigers bid on Cepedes, however.

Ouch, that is terrible news for Detroit. Looks like Avila gets a chance to prove himself as the real deal or a one year wonder as the full time catcher this season.

But yeah, that bat of his will be sorely missed.

Meh. Martinez only caught 20 some games last year. Avila is their catcher. Martinez is their DH.

The larger point still stands...big loss for the Tigers offensively.

Tough break for the Tiggers. Are there any notable DH players on the market? Somebody like Damon could help them out again. They have Cabrera at first, and I doubt they'd add that kind of payroll e.g. Prince to the team.

That really sucks for him. I hate the Tigers, but Victor Martinez is a great player.

Maybe the Tigers will trade for another DH. Perhaps they might be interested in either Alex Rios or Adam Dunn.

Teams generally like their DH candidates to be able to, you know, hit.

Even on the DL, Victor's numbers will be better than Dunn's

Not while they still have Miguel Cabrera.

An MRI revealed the tear. Martinez is expected to get a second opinion
next week from orthopedic specialist Dr. Richard Steadman.

That was what I thought at first too, but both could play 1b and Dh and Prince's dad had a pretty good run there. When is Victor's contract up?

He is signed through 2014 at 4 years/50 million.

Injuries are a part of the game, but you feel for someone when they have a bad injury like this.

Fangraphs take.

I largely agree. Victor is essentially a DH only at this point. The loss of a 2.5 to 3 WAR player's production isn't a death knell. With some creativity and a smart signing or two, his absence won't be as pronounced as many think. Pena is a great option for them. They also might acquire an OF and move Delmon to DH which would likely improve their OF defense significantly.

The Tigers are still very much the favorites to win the Central this season.

Hence their strong interest in Cepedes. Delmon ****ing blows in the outfield.

As much as I dislike Phil Rogers, he mentioned Marlon Byrd as a trade option. He'd be a great fit. Hell, this might push the Tigers to pull the trigger on Garza in hopes of shoring up the rotation to recoup some of those wins.

This was a real kick in the crotch as I was leaving work today. Not something you expect to hear in January.

Everybody's been mentioned, Pena, Morales, Abreu, Damon....

It really sucks to see a player of his caliber go down. I guess they just have to pray for a miracle in Detroit. That's the only way he's playing this year.
