Why does this seem to have Vernon Wells written all over it?

I remember when a multi-year contract was 3-5 years. Now we go to eight?

If they sign him to these ridiculous numbers and terms, they will be regretting it by 2014 at the latest.

I tend to agree with you, but Matt Kemp is really, really good. I don't understand the 6+ year contracts...why even go there?

I don't see a huge downside here. He'll be 34 or 35 when the contract ends, should still be a good hitter.

The length is absurd, especially since he had moments of inconsistent play before 2011. But the Dodgers need a positive news story beyond the impending sale. They need to get fans back into Chavez Ravine. If McCourt foots some of this bill, then all good.

You mean other than the fact that he is more likely to put up his 2008/2009 numbers than his 2011 numbers? Yes, he's a very good defensive player, but the numbers point to this year being an anomaly, as opposed to what he is expected to put up in the future. Huge overpayment, IMO.
