Must be purely for a pinch hit role:

He probably recognizes he doesn't have a lot of time left and doesn't want a heavy workload.

And this gives him a decent shot at getting a ring too. Kinda odd that he went from Cleveland to Philly again.

You will see him at 1B since Ryan Howard will be out...perhaps for all of 2012

Exactly. He's a weapon as a part-time pinch hitter. Nothing more. Supposedly, the Phils are trying to get Cuddyer for LF and 1B. It's a smart tactic, since they are close friends.

Sounds more like a job for Pujols or Fielder.

With all due respect to Jim, if he's playing first base the Phillies are completely out of their minds...a statue has almost as much range and his back won't allow him to play every day anymore.

Well then the Phillies are going to be quite a bit of trouble.

With a torn Achilles tendon, that's a good bet.

It's more likely he'll split time at 1b with John Mayberry Jr
and pinch hit for the man who was his first hitting coach in
Cleveland,Charlie Manuel.

Good luck,Jim. Hope to see you in the 2012 WS representing
my favorite NL team, the Phillies.

I'd welcome that move. An A.L. Central without Michael Cuddyer
looks a lot better from a White Sox fan's perspective.

Kenny, SIGN JASON KUBEL!! NOW!!:D:

They just signed Howard to a long extension in 2010 I think, so it seems unlikely that they will go out and sign one of them. Maybe I am wrong though.

I dont see a team now a day carrying a pinch hitter that can only hit righties for an entire season. If he does play some 1st base why didnt he do that with the dodgers. the twins or more with the Sox? This signing makes no sense.

a pinch hitter that can only hit righties for an entire season.
Thome's OPS was 50 points higher vs. lefties compared to righties in 2011.

Some stats can be misleading. Where his numbers mostly against good left handed starters or some bad relievers?
I suspect the latter.

Yea it just probably just took a couple decades to get the hang of hitting lefties better than righties. I am sure next year he will be getting twice the amount of AB's vs lefties rather than righties.

God love Gentleman Jim, but if he starts the season as the everyday first baseman for the Phils he will be on the DL with a back injury within the first three weeks of the season

Thome's plate appearances by pitcher in 2011 are here (http://www.baseball-reference.com/play-index/batter_vs_pitcher.cgi?batter=thomeji01#gotresults&batter=thomeji01&min_year_game=2011&max_year_game=2011&post=1&opp_id=&throws=any&opponent_status=&c1criteria=&c1gtlt=eq&c1val=0&c2criteria=&c2gtlt=eq&c2val=0&orderby=PA&orderby_dir=desc&orderby_second=Name&orderby_dir_second=asc&ajax=1&submitter=1&z=1). (I haven't digested them, so I can't answer your question.)
