View Full Version : Boston and Atlanta try to pick up the pieces

A month ago the Red Sox and Braves were considered locks for the postseason.

New England fans today are still in shock and they are angry. There is going to be a bloodbath on Yawkey Way with Francona most likely not coming back.

The news conference at Fenway this afternoon was surreal.

Fangraphs documents the crazy moments around Midnight in both Baltimore and St. Petersburg.

Meanwhile in Atlanta there doesn't seem to be the angst with the Braves like we are seeing in New England today.

I don't think people in Atlanta are as invested in MLB as the people of New England. The fans there may be hurt, but they'll be over it by the time college football comes around on Saturday. The die-hards may feel it a little longer.

Whispers coming out now that Adrian Gonzalez was a major clubhouse problem.

Remember he was part of the Padres collapse.

Boston last won 2 games in a row in August.

The anger of the true fans is coming out now. Red Sox fans pay through the nose to support this club, still have to deal with a 100 year old ballpark.

A very quiet day in Boston after a terrible, terrible month for the fans. Night after night they came, they tuned in. Rain, quiet streets. Congratulations to the entire Tampa Bay organization on a miraculous, but well-earned passport to the postseason.

Adrian Gonzalez? Are they grasping for straws? He seems like the quietest easy-goingest guy on the team.

Not commiserating with Boston fans in the least, but we're spoiled with the Cell with it wide seats, large concourse, myriad food options and every seat facing the action.

Even Old Comiskey with the obstructions and beams wasn't as bad as Fenway which has a lot of bad seats, especially in the corners and outfield.

Maybe if they'd start demanding a new stadium instead of worshiping the ****hole like it's some temple to the baseball gods until the very moment they miss the playoffs, then start bitching about the place, they'd get a better place in which to watch baseball.

Not attacking you or your point, just pointing out the hypocrisy in the timing/nature of their lamentations.

I think the Red Sox are in a dangerous place right now - very close to where the Mets were in 2007. The Mets have yet to recover from that.

A sidebar to this is the play of the Orioles in September. They played everybody hard and I was talking to some Balto media members who sense the death of Mike Flannigan suddenly pushed those players harder.

I sensed the Red Sox season was going to end badly but what happened at Midnight even Stephen King couldn't dream up.

Boy I would LOVE to see the Red Sox become as bad as the Mets, but Selig will probably then expand the playoffs to include EVERY team from the AL East.

I'm curious. Why is Joe Girardi not the most unpopular person in Boston "today"? I haven't heard anyone question the Yankees not bringing in their closer with a 1-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Sure, they didn't have anything to play for, but neither did Philly. Apparently, Tony LaRussa commended Philadelphia on playing the game the right way. So, how did the Yankees play it?

Joe was upfront about what he would do once NYY clinched AL best record.

On Sunday in the late game he could have sent A-Rod or Jeter up to pinch hit.

Most real Boston fans understand what he did.

Why shouldn't Girardi rest his closer for the playoffs? He pitched the night before and Girardi absolutely did the right thing. It's not his job to make sure Boston gets in. It was a meaningless game for the Yankees and I thought he went far enough by playing most of his starters.

Well, of course he's going to say that, considering that Philly took out the Cardinals' only competition for the Wild Card.

I highly doubt that he says that if Philly loses.

Well for all you Boston haters please remember that the White Sox swept Boston in late May AT Fenway.

The 2011 Red Sox were an insane team to follow in 2011

Horrible April and September - best in MLB the other 4 months.

Maybe they were simply a good warm weather team.....

I don't hate the Red Sox; I detest a certain element of Red Sox Nation who thinks they are God's gift to humanity. You seem like you are NOT one of those people.

I do remember that White Sox sweep in Boston in late May and I did enjoy it.

Right now, I'm actually grateful to the Red Sox for taking the spotlight with their massive collapse. It has completely overshadowed Ozzie's departure, which I think is a good thing. As a White Sox fan, I am ready to move on.

I'm calling my 83 year old dad right now to see what he thinks of Francona possibly being the next White Sox manager. As for your Red Sox, remember you have a huge fan base which translates into lots of money. Isn't Fenway Park sold out for almost every game? The Red Sox can easily sign free agents and will always have a good team.

+1
If Girardi brings in Rivera to close out the game and something freakish happens, like taking a come backer off the face or knee. He would be absolutely killed by management and all of NY. There's no reason for him to put Rivera in there....the Red Sox should have taken care of their business and not worry about who plays in another game.

How many licks does it take to get to the center of...

And how many Boston-hating posts will it take for Fenway to finally lose his cool and say, "You know what? This is what I really think of you Chicago folk:"

Hey Fens, I heard allegations on ESPN today about pitchers drinking in clubhouse during games between starts (and I have also heard this from a very good source about the White Sox staff, and one instance in particular would blow your Sox off, but that is neither here nor there). My question is who are these accusations being directed at? Also, this talk about a really divided clubhouse, and Francona having to have 3 team meetings this year when he usually has one per season.......who was the big culprit? And then, for a town noted for its sportswriting, why didnt this come up earlier in this dream season? Was this known and not reported to preserve the little team chemistry it appears there was? Are Boston sportswriters generally Boston sports fans? Because that is what it appears to me. I'm interested to hear your answer on this because here in Chicago, I know we have some homers, but it appears we have some reporters/beat writers who look to cause trouble by any means, and with the 2 teams we also have writers like Levine who are Cub fans but would break a Sox story in a heartbeat if his sources share it with him.

I drove back from Baltimore with one of the writers - he said he 'sensed' it but nobody would speak on or off the record.

We did know when Gammo broke the Francona story last week that it was legit as Peter doesn't play games.

Boston writers love a good story.

It's funny - I KNEW 3 months ago Ozzie was going to Miami and many here said no...but the reason the Marlins manager quit was he was told Ozzie would take his place..period.

This Francona situation has everyone flabbergasted. Something happened in Toronto 3 weeks ago that sealed his fate but we don't know yet what that was.

It is not playing well here with fans or media

Seems the fans believe Beckett and Youkilis and Ortiz could be the veterans Tito was disappointed in (same SOSH thread I cited above).

And I love this quote from Tito: "You've got to be all-in in this job" --

Ok, my misunderstanding. If the Cubs get Theo, the fans on the north side will be dancing in the streets because they will assume that Theo will bring a championship to Wrigley. Or two.

Funny thing is Theo gets credit for 2004 and 2007 BUT

The core of the 2004 team was done by Dan Duquette

The additions for 2007 mainly Josh Beckett and Mike Lowell were done by Bill Lajoie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Lajoie) when Theo was off in his gorilla suit dancing to rock bands in South America

Theo is overrated.

Here is a bittersweet story of a loyal 81 year old Boston fan..

He was at Camden Yards because he can no longer afford Fenway Park..

He is 81

AND

He needed dialysis treatments at Baltimore’s Mercy Hospital before the games..:o:

Just noticed the title of the thread, and yet the thread is about the team currently in Boston, not the other team who also started out there.

What of the Braves collapse? Did they overuse their young relievers? Or their young starters? Why did Jason Heyward have such a terrible season? Was he hurt? Is he a bust?

Will they be stronger next year? Will they be able to jettison Derek Lowe and his bad, but short contract?

I've liked the Braves a bit ever since spending several years in Atlanta.

Looks like the Braves' hitting coach Larry Parrish is the only one who lost his job over this collapse: http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2011/09/30/after-further-review-braves-fire-hitting-coach/?cxntfid=blogs_atlanta_braves_blog

As for why they collapsed, I'm not too sure. It appears that a lot of people believe that Gonzalez overused his young relievers, but I have a hard time believing that was the only reason. I don't follow the Braves much, so I can't really say.

and with the report that pitchers were drinking during games?

This video seems to be what caused Red Sox ownership to explode - John Lackey, Josh Beckett , Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and Tim Wakefield appear — in uniform! — in country singer Kevin Fowler’s video “Hell Yeah, I Like Beer”?

How did the team allow this video to be shot at Fenway?? :?::gulp:

1. Baseball sells a ton of beer.
2. The appearances make a nice crossover to country music fans of which there are many.
3. At no point do they say "Hell yeah, I like Beer while I'm Playing" or "Hell yeah, I like beer while I'm choking away a playoff spot". :D: Probably had no idea about this problem when the video shoot was approved.
Oh yeah and
4. It's beer, not heroin or cocaine. Americans love beer.

You can't make these stats up

Boston starters’ ERA in September was 7.08, the highest total in a month in franchise history.

Red Sox were 77-0 in games in which they led after the eighth inning.

The Braves also had 6 blown saves (out of 11) in September. Part of that had to do with having a rookie closer and probably overworked bullpen. They also scored only 87 runs in September (only San Diego was worse). Firing the batting coach was probably justified.

Only a matter of time before the gossip pages got involved

This video seems to be what caused Red Sox ownership to explode - John Lackey, Josh Beckett , Jon Lester, Clay Buchholz and Tim Wakefield appear — in uniform! — in country singer Kevin Fowler’s video “Hell Yeah, I Like Beer”?

How did the team allow this video to be shot at Fenway?? :?::gulp:

Its beer, fens. That generally doesn't offend anyone except maybe recovering alcoholics. Heck, teams get drunk on champagne and beer after winning titles. On national TV.

Red Sox were 77-0 in games in which they led after the eighth inning.

Wrong!

:tiphat:

This interview on WEEI/NESN this morning by ownership is only causing us to ask more questions...

For example John Henry seemed surprised about the beer video...and he claimed he had not known of it until asked this morning. Given the media uproar I don't buy that.

As for why they collapsed, I'm not too sure. It appears that a lot of people believe that Gonzalez overused his young relievers, but I have a hard time believing that was the only reason. I don't follow the Braves much, so I can't really say.

The bullpen was gassed at the end, but I don't blame Gonzalez for using them too much. Jair Jurrjens and Tommy Hanson were hurt, and Derek Lowe just plain sucked in the second half. He had to rely on the farm hands to pitch way more innings than anticipated, so of course he had to go to the pen (which was their strength)

As far as the offence, they had problems scoring runs all season; it was especially hard to watch them in September. Heward was completely lost out there; he has not adjusted to major league pitching since the second half of 2010. McCann was banged up, and Chipper Jones just looked old.

Read this link (http://blogs.ajc.com/atlanta-braves-blog/2011/10/06/wren-fredi-g-reflect-on-collapse-look-ahead/)for a good analysis.
