Yup. If they had Wainwright along with Carpenter, and had the series set up so that they each pitch twice, it could be a different story. But, it's not.

Phillies sweep.

Phillies in four. With that being said, the Cards have played them tough all year, and all four games will be very close.

I would (and did) say Phillies, but this one is the only series I'm on the fence about. The Cards made a good run to get in and are semi-hot right now. The Phillies haven't been playing their best ball. Those who haven't seen a bat in a few weeks might be a little rusty.

Veteran Phils fans will not forget 1964.That year, the Phils had a 6 game lead with 12 left to play. The Cards got hot,the Phils went on a losing streak, and that was that.

Phils in 4.

I will be cheering for the Cards (family connection), but I can't see them over coming that Phils pitching staff.

And now Ibanez drills one. 6-3.

The NL Wild Card race was the race to see who would get swept by the Phillies.

If Atlanta had made it, then the Braves would be playing the Brew Crew in the first round and the Phillies would be playing the D-backs.

Cliff Lee is not quite a bad motha this evening. Tied in the 6th inning.

I'll tell you what. Craig is going to be something else.

Craig does it again. And Uncle Cholly left Cliff out there way too long. He should have been out before they tied the game.

I agree. I was surprised to see Lee go back out there for the seventh.

Cards win 5-4 to even the series at one. A surprising comeback win, especially considering that Lee couldn't hold the 4-0 lead.

Surprise, surprise. Another day, another Cardinal finds something to bitch about. This time, it's Albert Pujols about the late-afternoon start times:
http://espn.go.com/mlb/playoffs/2011/story/_/id/7061313/albert-pujols-pans-mlb-late-afternoon-start-times

Well gee Albert, like the Phillies didn't have to play through the same thing yesterday. Please Philly, just finish them off today.

Edwin Jackson's on the mound for the Redbirds.

He could throw 100 pitches by the 4th inning, so the Phils' odds are pretty good.It would be nice
to see that vaunted Phils' offense score more than 3 runs in this game. Last night was not fun for
Phils' fans with ulcers.

Lance Berkman is brutal in the OF.

SoxSpeed22
10-05-2011, 08:30 PM
Jackson has now turned into an effective sinker-ball pitcher. 8 of his outs were on groundouts and he was mixing changeups in there. This might be the only game Friday, but what a matchup with Carpenter and Halladay.

Possible, but not certain anymore. This is a Philly team we are talking about here. They rarely meet expectations.

Good way. I hate the Yankees and I am tired of the Phillies.

Got it. I'm almost the same way. The Cardinals have always been my favorite NL team, second favorite in MLB after the Sox, so after them winning it all, the very next thing I want is the Yankees eliminated.

Once if and when that's done, I'll be a happy camper. I've seen the Cardinals go to 5 World Series in my lifetime, winning two of them. So even though I really want them to knock out the Phillies, if they don't, I'll be disapointed, but really won't be all upset, and will still enjoy the rest of the playoffs. As long as the Yankees are GONE after tonight.

I love 1-0 pitching duels!! I'm getting so nervous, and I don't even care about these teams. Every pitch is huge and potentially a big turning point in the game. If this were the Sox, I'd be having a heart attack, not unlike during the blackout game (I wasn't as nervous in game 4 of the world series because they still had 3 more games to win it). I'm rooting for the Cards because I'm sick of Philly, plus I want the Brew Crew in the Series, and I think they have a better chance of beating St. Louis. I hope it ends 1-0.

Another amazing job by LaRussa and the Cards especially after Wainwright got hurt early in the spring. Those guys they picked up at the trade deadline were huge the past two months. That is one sharp organization.

Another interesting angle on this-

If the Phillies would have laid down for the Braves in Game 162, they would have played Arizona in the first round, and the Brewers would have played Atlanta. Phillies may have had better luck with Arizona pitching.

Outstanding. What a game. Keep it going Cards. With no White Sox in the post season, this is the next best thing for me. Weird that the NLCS is a re-match of the '82 World Series.

Let's see, Red Sox eliminated on the last day of the regular season, Yankees bounced in the first round, and three of the final four teams are fromthe midwest. No east or wear coast teams. I'm liking this post season.

Carpenter was amazing...that breaking ball was crazy.
A hot pitcher in the playoffs is a helluva drug.
I am pleased to see that the big money once again does not guarantee success in the playoffs..altho it helps a lot to get there.

Midwest series, even Texas is more midwest than east or west.
Works for me. I want to root for the Brewers but they are winning everything with the Packers and Badgers....oh well.

Howard may never be the same player again. What a terrible blow.

I hope he can make it back. A great player and a great guy. I met him in 2004, when he was still in the minor leagues, and spent 15-20 minutes chatting with him before a game. Even then, it was clear Howard was headed for bigger and better things, but was nevertheless happy to take time and talk baseball with a fan. I've never forgotten that experience, and wish Ryan well.
