As the team continues to underachieve and falls further out of contention, speculation grew that manager Jerry Manuel would be the ninth major-league manager fired this season. But GM Kenny Williams said Manuel is safe for the rest of the season as well as 2003.
Manuel has called numerous team meetings this year, he's worked individually with struggling players and he's shaken up the lineup at will. Still, the team has failed to hit on a consistent basis, the pitching has been in and out and mental mistakes continue to happen. Manuel has been a bright light in the organization since becoming manager in 1998.
But he knows how the game works. If the team doesn't turn it around down the stretch, Manuel might have to make some changes on his staff. Hitting coach Gary Ward, first-base coach Gary Pettis and pitching coach Nardi Contreras all appear to be on thin ice . . . .
