Once the Angels finish at Toronto tomorrow, they head home to finish the season with 3 vs. Oakland and 3 vs. Texas.

Tampa also finishes at home after one more in New York, with 3 vs. the Jays and 3 vs. the Yankees.

Boston finishes on the road with 3 at the Yankees and 3 at Baltimore.

Tigers and Rangers are still fighting it out for 2nd best record. Yankees' magic number is 3 to clinch best record.

What are the odds that the WC ends in a two-way or even a three-way tie?

Zakath
09-22-2011, 08:03 AM
They started the season 2-10, and in this latest swoon, they're 6-17 dating back to August 30 (haven't won two games in a row since August 27, when they swept a DH from Oakland).

In between, they went 80-41. Had they played that way the whole season, they'd win 107.

Angels are leading.

If they win and the Red Sox lose tonight, then we really have something.

At that point the Red Sox and Rays would be tied, with the Angels one back.

Then if the Yankees beat the Rays 2 of 3, the Orioles beat the Red Sox 2 of 3, and the Angels beat the Rangers 2 of 3, there would be a three way tie.

Then it would be Angels at Red Sox on Thursday and the winner would host the Rays on Friday. And it would also totally mess up the MLB playoff schedule.

Yes, but whoever you acquire can't be on your postseason roster if he wasn't your property on September 1. Plus, the player would need to either clear waivers or had cleared waivers at some point after August 1.

The Red Sox are trying to make a trade for a starting pitcher for Wednesday night. They would like to keep Lester open for either a playin game or Game 1 of the ALDS.

The other option is Wakefield.

If that's the philsophy the Red Sox deserve to watch the playoffs. If Lester can go Wednesday, he sure as hell better on the mound.

I was referencing an infamous question Fenway asked after the Patriots choked in the SB a few years ago.

As far as the race goes, no matter what happens from here you just can't say enough good things about Joe Maddon and the Rays. After an offseason of losing their star OF and gutting the bullpen, they haven't quit and are not going away. Such a great story.

"Deserve" has got nothing to do with it. You are the fan of a team. You are happy when they win, and pissed when they lose, especially when they choke a big lead. That's it. There is no "fans deserve" a winning team, or not deserving a team blowing it and losing. That's true for every fan of every team in sports. That includes Boston.

I hadn't kept track of how far the Red Sox have fallen. On Aug 9 they were 11 games ahead of the Rays and on Aug 16 they were 10 games ahead.:o:

But I have a hard time feeling sorry for a fanbase of a team that has made the playoffs 6 of the last 8 seasons (including 2 WS titles) and is pretty much a lock to be playoff contenders for the foreseeable future thanks, in part, being able to outspend 28 other teams.

Maybe I would have a little more sympathy if we didn't have ESPN and Ken Burns shoving the Red Sox constantly down our throats.

Oh, and I'm still ticked off that we had to listen to a Red Sox fan shamelessly rooting for his team as he did the national broadcast for the 2005 ALDS.

So, to "Red Sox Nation" out there, I give a big hearty Chris Berman Ohhhhhhhhh NOooooooo!!!!!!!! :whiner::violin:

Yea but that's a silly way of doing it because it's pretty much manufactured. If that were in place right now then the Red Sox and Tampa would be setting up their matchup for that one game because they would have clinched already. The same is true with St. Louis and Atlanta.

That's true, but who is the more dangerous team come October, the Rays with their lights out pitching staff, or the Red Sox who have lost 20-something games this September?

Just like in Week 17 last year, sure the Bears didn't owe it to anyone to play hard in a meaningless game against the Packers, but ultimately down the road, it might have cost them.

What's so weird is that it wouldn't totally surprise me if the Red Sox did fairly well in the playoffs IF they made it. Who would have thought the 2006 Cardinals would have done anything in the playoffs? The 2000 Yankees looked awful in September too. If I had to wager money on it though, I would suspect that both the Red Sox and the Rays get bounced early.

For tonight the Yankees should be trying to ensure that everyone is healthy and well rested when the playoffs start, if someone needs to get some work in put him in there.

In terms of multi-game one-night excitement, it somewhat feels like an early NCAA Tournament night.

Texas has beaten the Angels, and holds on to the 2 seed in the AL. They will get the wild card, while the Tigers will get the Yankees.

What a way to end the MLB regular season tonight! Two great games going on at the same time - Yankees\Rays and Braves\Phillies, both with HUGE implications! This is awesome, and its fun since I have no rooting interest (maybe outside of hoping Boston doesn't get "in").

Yankees 1st and 2nd, 2 outs, top of 10. Farnsworth struck out first two, only to walk Dickerson, who stole second. Gardner IBB.

Romine K's. On to bottom of 10th. Upton, Longoria, and Lobaton due up.

Yep, it would be fun! I'd definitely have to tune in to both games. Baseball history could happen here, as there have never been two tie-breakers in the same year.

Boone Logan was a key cog in the Yankees' 7-run blown lead, too. I'm trying to figure out who the Orioles or Red Sox can scrounge up to top these two... Maybe a pinch run appearance by Mike Caruso?
