The Rays have the pitching and have been hitting the ball pretty good the last week or so. They looked pretty darn good against Boston in all 3 games last weeekend. Would love another sweep in Fenway this coming weekend. Red Sox Nation may be on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

It would be awesome to see Tampa rally and win the wild card. I'm in favor of anything that prevents Boston and New York from making the ALCS.

At the very least, I'm glad the Rays are making the haughty, self-absorbed Boston fans sweat.

If there was any doubt about adding another playoff team, Tampa making the playoffs will end all of this discussion. Selig should pass a rule that says the Yankees and Red Sox always make the playoffs and be done with it.

Tigers are 6-1 against Tampa including winning 3 of 4 at Tampa at the end of August. Could've been a sweep if Inge didn't throw to the wrong base in the 10th inning.

That would be great if the Rays can win the wild card spot!

If the Rays do over take the Red Sox, get ready for all the whining from ESPN and the rest of the national media about how "nobody cares" about the MLB playoffs this year since both the Yankees and Red Sox aren't in it.:whiner:

Yep, they'll see the extra wild card team as a way to keep the travesty of NYY and Bos both not making the playoffs from happening again.

I seriously wonder if there will ever be a season in the foreseeable future where neither the Yankees OR the Red Sox are in the playoffs.

I actually hate the Rays because of their "Fans" As far as I'm concerned they don't deserve a winner. When the Sox played them in the 08 playoffs I went to a game and they were the most obnoxious fans I've ever dealt with. Including Red Sox, Yanks, Cubs.

They acted like they were big fans all along and loved the team and your team sucked etc. Not to mention those AWFUL AWFUL cow bells. After one of them was busy yelling at me for two innings about how bad the Sox suck I turned around and asked him to name me 5 players on the team without looking at the scoreboard and he couldn't do it.

At least the Red Sox have some actual die hard fans that live and die with the team. Same with the Yankees.

When you went to that game, probably 80% of that ballpark was filled by people who never went to a Rays game before.

Sucks that the Braves are in a free fall...again.

The people in Boston are starting to get restless. This is an image of one of the riots that have been breaking out all over the city, as the anxiety and angst start to boil over. Fortunately, because it was Boston, the rioters were very well behaved, and only a minimum of foul language was heard. All the New York and Boston papers are going crazy, saying it is some of the worst things they have ever seen. But I don't know how much more the whole Northeast can take......

John Smoltz, who was doing the game yesterday on TBS, basically said he'd rather be in Tampa's shoes (schedule-wise). He said playing a team like Baltimore seven times as the Red Sawx do, you don't know what you're gonna get but they take these games as their world series with a chance to play spoiler. He said he's rather take his chance with the Yanks who don't have much to play for.

Red Sox get a much needed split in the doubleheader but find themselves only 1 game up in the loss column over Tampa. In the final three series, the Rays have the tougher opponents but Tampa finishes with six at home while Boston finishes with six on the road.

The math favors Boston but then again the math favored Vancouver in the Cup finals too....you got to play it out.

It was very strange to see a Fenway crowd cheering at the NYY score last night...and in the end the Yankees may save Boston. NYY does not want to lose home field to Detroit and as of now NYY has not clinched anything yet.

Reality is the Red Sox even if they do hold on don't appear to be a team that will not hang around long. Epstein is taking a lot of heat in the media for the situation Boston is in and the whispers are getting stronger about him taking the Cubs job.

The Yanks may have a bigger problem -- facing Detroit in the ALDS. As of today, Detroit and Texas have identical 89-65 records. The team with the better record would play the wild card, assuming the WC is Boston or Tampa. If the WC is Los Angeles, then the Angels would play the Yanks and Detroit and Texas would face each other.

I am not sure what happens if the WC comes out of the East and Detroit and Texas finish the season with identical records. I believe that Detroit won the season series against Texas 6-3 and I assume that would be the tiebreaker.

Rays beat Toronto 5-2 and Boston loses Game 1 of DH to NYY 6-2. Tampa is now only 1/2 game out of the WC. And if the Rays make the post-season, the late season additions of lefties Matt Moore and Alexander Torres (in Tampa's 6-2 win against Toronto, Torres came into game in the 2nd inning and pitched 5 scoreless innings for the Rays) makes things very interesting.

A collective nearly $1 billion down the drain this year for some very pissed off large-market playoff teams if this happens, and over that if you include a certain team that was 'All Out' since mid-April.
