In the past 20 yrs, the White Sox have been this far back (9 games or further) in the race on this date (September 7th), only 5 times...

1995, 1998, 1999, 2007 and ... 2011.

In the past 30 yrs, add 85', 86', 87', 88' and 89'

on the downside, 2011 is only the 2nd season out of 11 they've been this far back

on the upside, they bounced back to have winning records in 1990, 1996, 2000, and 2008..

What is the correlation between a winning percentage and games out of first?

There isn't one.

For example, in 1984, a team could have been 17 games out of first at the end of the season in the AL West and still have a winning record.

Does not surprise me. The Sox are in the top 4-5 in MLB in overall record from 1991-2011. They have consistently put competitive teams on the field the last two decades.

Or look at this season: The Braves are 22 games over .500, have the 5th best record in baseball, and yet are more games out of first than are the White Sox.
