Sad to see AJ out, and I hope he gets well soon. We'll definitely see if we need to bring in someone else for the future. My guess...yes.

This is the first time in AJ's MLB career that he's been on the DL. That's incredible for a catcher.

I wonder if this means he's out for the season.

Bruce Chen broke AJ's wrist? That's the only thing Chen's ever broke with one of his pitches.

That's been the MO on Flowers for as long as I have known of his existance.I have heard differently. I read that he had improved notably behind the plate (from someone scouts thought would be a 1B to someone who would more than hold his own at catcher). In 2009 he was named the best defensive C in his league. I haven't seen all of his starts, so I will have to wait and see. It could be an abberation.

Just for all those who dismiss the idea that the White Sox pitchers have a lot to do with the catchers being unable to throw out runners, a few weeks back when the Sox were at Minneapolis, Tom Kelly was doing the analysis on the Twins' broadcast. He commented on how bad the Sox pitchers were in general at getting the ball to the plate quickly. He said the method they use to determine whether to run on a pitcher is to take a stopwatch and time from the moment the pitcher breaks his stretch (first move) to the moment the ball arrives in the catcher's glove. If it's 1.3 seconds or less, you don't run. If it's more, you can take the chance.

I've since timed a lot of Sox pitchers with men on base. Try it yourself.

Losing AJ at this critical point could spell the end of the hope for a comeback. He was hitting well lately, and gave them a lefty stick in a lineup with leftys of a 44 yr old(Omar),a non-performer(Dunn) and then Juan, who is hitting well. DeAza will have to help out more from the left side.

You can't replace what AJ brings to the Sox.

I've always wanted Lucy to get a better chance with the Sox, it is now do or die time for Donny. The same can be said for Flowers as well.

If we can get to September, and AJ has healed enough to hit, he could be a DH, assuming Konerko can play the field by then.

Domeshot17

They need to start looking.

I don't know, Flowers has looked alright at the plate, his D has not been bad, it was well reported the strides he made in Triple A defensively, and he has a much stronger arm than AJ. Heck, AJ is proof you can be a catcher and never throw anyone out ever.

PaleHoser

:whiner:

I have two concerns with a left wrist fracture:

1. Would it be able to take a pounding when catching 140 pitches + warm-ups a game?

2. The top-hand generates much of the power in a hitter's swing, so how long until he can drive the ball again?

Depending on the severity of the break, it may be too much to ask/expect AJ to perform to his standards even if he's fortunate enough to recover before the end of the season.

Get well soon AJ!

There will be a lot of interest in Hernandez if the Reds make him available. Bruce Levine (http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/cubs/post/_/id/5771/catching-surplus-could-fuel-cubs-deal) seems to think the Cubs will make Soto available, too.

My guess is Hernandez and Ryan Doumit would be the two best options. Both have expiring contracts and are on teams that have fallen out of the race. AJP is under contract for next year, so I'm sure the Sox would like to avoid any additional financial commitments for next season.

Both Hernandez and Doumit could be acquired for the final 40 games, then allowed to leave in free agency at the end of the year.

AJ doesn't throw them out - but he doesn't let them go by him often. That's the main thing - especially when Edwin was here. He stops a lot of pitches in the dirt and that are way off target. The Sox have won some games this year because the opposing catcher couldn't stop a pitch in the dirt.

I fully expect this offseason's salary slashing to be a bloodbath.

The truth is that it's KW himself that painted us into this corner. We could afford something like $8M for 1 year of a so-so Edwin Jackson and $4M for 1 month of a totally useless Manny.....but now the team can't afford to spend less than $1M to plug a possible gaping hole.

...and that's not even considering the Dunn-Rios $24M debacle.

For a big guy,he can really run...shocking how quick he got to third on that triple. Tyler is an athlete. Thought he did a decent job blocking behind the plate also, and I know he has a good arm. Maybe he will grab the reins and make Ramon a distant memory next year.
