Twins picking up where they left off last night. Pavano getting roughed up in a fundamentally sound way, giving up 7 runs through 4. He may have to take one for the team to give the bullpen a rest.

Cleveland came in to the 9th down 2-1. Hafner, Santana and Chisenhall(bunt) all single. LaPorta has a full count and grounds into a 4-2-3 double play. Then Illinois native, Kipnis, last night's hero, struck out.

I watched it all on MLB network while Harold Reynolds did the color commentary. Pretty awesome.

After the Twins got a 20 put on them, I was sure they were finished. Then they win a Game 2 slugfest, and are up 4-1 in the 5th iining of Game 3. They actually have a reasonable chance to win three of four in Texas. :whiner: Mauer is raking now and I think they will endure until the end. Ugh, I hate them.

Edit: of course the Twins would not have won Game 2 if not for a chopper in the ninth over the mound that the SS booted.

Even with a win tonight, they are still six below .500. They can't beat the Tigers in head-to-head competition. They are horse****, just like the whole division.

In this awful division, I suppose anything is possible. I don't think the Twins are winning anything with that bullpen though.

Phil Dumatrait came on with the score 2-1 in the eighth inning tonight. He coughed up two tack-on runs in a fundamentally sound way. That made for a pretty easy save for Feliz.

I never count the Twins out---not out of respect, just an inevitable loathsome sort of feeling they give me. However, this year it will be tougher for them with a lousy bullpen and three teams ahead of them going into August.

Next up for them are the A's. Oakland may be down but they are still a pretty tough home team. If the Twins lose that series they then have four at LA -- who are playing very well. Let's hope they are 8 or 9 out and demoralized when they come home to play the Sox - which of course still may not prevent them from kicking the Sox's ass again. If the Sox somehow take THAT series, then we know the Twinks are done.

I'm only following on gameday, but the Tiger's had 1st and 3rd, 0 outs in the bottom of the 7th, while trailing only 3-1. However, they managed to hit into a 3-6-2 double play with Mags out at home; they didn't score; and the Angels scored 2 in the top of the 8th.

The Sox have lost five one-run games to KC and MIN this year:

April 5: 7-6 loss to KC
May 3: 1-0 loss to MIN
May 4: 3-2 loss to MIN

This race could take many interesting twists and turns to round out August.

Here are the series for each of the three teams and what I think will happen. I would like to know what you all think too.

White Sox

3 home with Indians - Sox take 2/3
3 home with Texas - Sox take 1/3
2 away at Angels - Sox take 1/2
3 away at Mariners - Sox take 2/3
3 home with Twins - Sox take 2/3

That would give the Sox 3 series wins 1 series loss and 1 series split. The record for the stretch would be 8-6 giving them a 68-66 record.

Indians

3 away at Sox - Indians 1/3
3 away at Tigers - Indians 1/3
4 home with Mariners - Indians 3/4
3 home with Royals - Indians 2/3
3 home with Athletics - Indians 2/3

That gives Indians 3 series wins and 2 series losses. The Indians would go 9-7 giving them a 69-64 record.

Tigers

3 home with Twins - Tigers 2/3
3 home with Indians - Tigers 2/3
4 away at Rays - Tigers 1/4
3 away at Twins - Tigers 1/3
3 home with Royals - Tigers 2/3

That gives Tigers 3 series wins and 2 series losses. The Tigers would go 8-8 giving them a 72 -64.

So I see the division sitting like this Sept 1. Morning

Tigers 72-64
Indians 69-64 1.5 games out
Sox 68-66 3 games out.

It also leaves a crazy September schedule for the race
Sox and Tigers play 6 times
Sox and Indians play 8 times
Tigers and Indians play 6 times

Unfortunately, the Indians had their two best pitchers going against the White Sox. They didn't save Masterson for the Tigers as some managers might have done. The Indians might have beaten the Tigers today if they hadn't left Jimenez in so long.

Both the Indians and White Sox are .500. The White Sox have played two more games. If two teams above .500 are tied in the games-behind column, the team with fewer games played is technically percentage points ahead. The opposite is true if two teams are below .500. At .500, both teams are technically tied.

Cleveland has two more games on the schedule than the White Sox. The White Sox have one more win and one more loss. The Indians have the opportunity to win both of those games. That is why people look at the loss column in determining which team is ahead.

Holy Cabrera! A Cabrera leads 3 teams in the AL Central in HR/RBI/Avg in 8 of 9 instances. Melky leads KC in HR(tie)/RBI/Avg. Astrubal leads the Tribe in HR/RBI/Avg. Miguel leads the Tigers in HR and RBI and missed Avg by a few points. When a White Sox pitcher sees the name Cabrera in a tough spot in a division game, an intentional walk is likely. The only other team in the AL with a triple crown team leader is the White Sox (Paul Konerko). What a great year he is having!

Twins load bases vs Verlander in the 1st and he gets out of it scoreless, and then Cabrera and Martinez go back to back to put Tigers up 2-0. Twins are hapless on offense ...6 runs in last 5 games.

Top of 6th...Tigers 4 Twins 2....c'mon Twinkies...get a spine!

Need KC to get at least one this week. They should now that Verlander has been pushed back a game to face the Sox. :whiner:

Also hoping Oak pitching can carry that sorry team for a game or two vs Cle.

Mostly though, another sweep over Minny is practically a must.

Wednesday was originally getaway day for a 3 game series. Thursday's game is a makeup game from May 15. We know how to reschedule our rainouts without any drama, unlike the Yankees, that's why you may not be aware of it.

In any case, the game is tied at 1 in the bottom of the second inning.

2-2 after 4. I am watching on MLB.com and KC has made 5 great defensive plays. They look inspired to tell you the truth. But not confident that Adcock will hold out. Hosmer with 2 HRs and a good defensive play. No matter what happens, I have to credit KC. They look as if they are in the race.

I don't know, that pitching staff is pretty thin behind Verlander. Fister's all right, but then the cliff really drops off between Scherzer, Porcello, and Penny

I think they have a decent shot in the short 5 game ALDS because of Verlander potentially pitching twice and their offense. However, they will likely be exposed in a long 7 game series where pitching depth is way more important.

Royals win over Tigers! 11-8 victory for KC!

Thank you,Royals.

So the first part of Leyland's gamble of throwing callup Turner in against the Royals( 4.1 innings 6 runs) and pushing back Verlander to face the Sox. Now, the Sox need to make it a real mistake by beating Verlander tomorrow nite, and the noose might start to tighten against Leyland and his tigers.

In 2006 and 2009, Leyland led the Tigers to 11-16 finishes. His cred with Tiger fans is razor thin. They are expecting a collapse due to Leyland's propensity to overuse his pitchers during the summer.

Please start the panic this weekend Sox....go,Johnny,go!!

5.5 games out...4 back in the loss column...sure would be nice to go to Minny on sunday nite only one back in the loss column...but I would take 3 back..of course, then the doubleheader on Monday with Stewart and Humber starting becomes the next hurdle...hang in,Sox. The Tigers have an imploding bullpen(13th in the AL in WHIP) and a shaky rotation outside of Verlander. They are capable of collapse,if they hit a dry stretch on offense(which might not happen, admittedly). That road trip of 3 to Chicago, then 4 out in Oakland, and back for 2 vs KC...tricky for the Tigers.

With any kind of middle relief, KC would have taken all 4 in Detroit. Tigers still have 4 left with both Oakland and Baltimore so the schedule tilts in their favor. This could be a really fun weekend!

I like the optimism but don't forget the Sox have a pretty tough road ahead of them too and have no margin for error. We have two double headers to deal with down the stretch including 3 games in 36 hours. A sweep this weekend could definitely get the old "sphincters tightening up" as Hawk is fond of saying. Beating Verlander would be huge.

I really am not sure how to assess remaining schedules.
The A's out in Oakland, in September, can be surprisingly fiesty.
The O's,with bad pitching,do hit the heck outta the ball, and Bucky is the kind of nudge that makes his players go hard right to the end.

The Tigers are not great on the road, and they have that 9 game road trip left.
Now, conversely the Sox are good on the road,so they might have too many home games left:D:

It starts this weekend...Sox must take this series to be seriously in this thing, unless the Tigers just collapse. Maggs is getting hot for them,so they might just hit their way to the title.

In 2009 Leyland led the Tigers to an 11-16 record finish. He also led them to a 17-16 finish as they won 6 in a row before that. And a 38-38 finish. The 2009 Tigers were basically a .500 team.

Be very afraid of this Royals team. They are going to be damn good. Maybe even next year.

KC needs pitching. They will win a lot more games next year like today's game, but they'll still lose too many games like yesterday's (not being biased here, just looking at the makeup of their team).
