McCoy Stadium in Pawtucket, Rhode Island is special - no between inning gimmicks - just 38 miles from Boston

McCoy has quite the history - it started as a WPA project in the late 30's and was finally finished in 1946. Classic Rhode Island it wound up costing more to build than Yankee Stadium 20 years earlier.

Longest game in baseball history (33 innings) was played there in 1981.

Only 38 miles from Fenway (and 12 from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough) the franchise is now a major part of the fabric of Rhode Island and SE Mass.

All home games are televised on COX cable statewide in RI using the scoreboard cameras and WHJJ audio.

Pawsox radio puts many MLB teams to shame and every play by play announcer in the past 20 years is now working for either a MLB or NFL team.

Just a very well run operation

Out of town the one time I was in Louisville for training

DBAP isn't too bad, but maybe a little sterile.

Fenway: Well said but I would add one more observation. The fan comes first at McCoy and is treated very well. Prices make it a family destination. On the field, the Red Sox always have quality prospects so the product on the field is also very competitive.

Top priced ticket is $11 :)

Boston's AA in Portland, Maine is also well run as is SS-A Lowell.

I have never heard anybody say they didn't enjoy Pawtucket

Pawsox on NESN tonight vs the Ironpigs.(In HD no less)

Is that the team formerly known as the Hickory Crawdads? Have they been playing in the same stadium for a long time?

I saw a game at their stadium when they were a Sox affiliate, Sox against Hickory. It must have been 15 years ago. That stadium was nice enough, but I've also been to McCoy, and I agree with Fenway on this one.

The Hickory Crawdads (http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/index.jsp?sid=t448) are still around I believe and that's the team I was referring to. I've never been to their stadium, I just love their name & emblem.
