With today's outfield alignment (Pierre/Rios/Dunn) + the size of the outfield in Arizona- will this be the worst defensive alignment we've had since Garr/Lemon/Washington?

No. But it might be the tallest, with Dunn and Rios over 6'5''.

Not Even close. Any outfield with Ralph Garr in it, is the worst.

And that outfield was "balanced" somewhat because Lemon was a great defensive outfielder.

Rios is an excellent CF also his problems this year notwithstanding.

I don't remember if Garr last until Claudell Washington showed up, but that would be a Sox outfield to make me shudder, even if Lance Johnson were in center.

In the early part of last decade there were times when the likes of Jose Valentin and Carl Everett were playing center field with Carlos Lee in left. That was an ugly outfield. So was the outfield in the second half of 2008 when we had the ancient Ken Griffey Junior and Jermaine Dye in center and right with Carlos Quentin in left. My gosh, we would occasionally have Pods in center with Quentin in left and Dye in right in 2009. Defense has never been a staple of Kenny Williams' years as GM.

I may be the only person on WSI who thinks so, but Quentin gets a bad rap for his defense. Not to say that he's good by any means, but he's not far below league average when you consider all of his skills. He's got average speed, an above-average arm and below-average range. And, frankly, he's not a worse outfielder than Pierre.

6/5/2007: Mackowiak/Owens/Dye
8/3/2007: Podsednik/Andy Gonzalez/Dye
4/19/2008: Quentin/Alexei Ramirez/Swisher

Quentin takes some terrible routes to the ball and gets a bad jump on a lot of them. He's pretty bad.

Any outfield that had Carlos Lee playing left would be at or near the top of the list of making you cover your eyes because you can't watch.

I said his range is below average. His average speed and above-average arm make him average overall. Even if you want to downgrade his range more than I am, there are still a dozen or more guys starting around MLB that are worse.

In 1983, the Sox occassionally had Kittle in LF, Law in CF and Paciorek in RF. There probably are some high schools who have a better defensive outfield than that.

We once had Rob Mackowiak in CF.

It doesn't get much worse than Lee and Ordonez playing the corners. Maggs wasn't a bad fielder, but he definitely wasn't good.

Quentin - Griffey - Dye was pretty bad.

Excellent might be pushing it, but he can certainly hold his own in CF.

That may be one of the worst all time.

Yeah, that one came to mind for me. Mackowiak in CF, Pods in LF, and Dye in RF. Carlos Lee was also REALLY bad his first couple years in LF but eventually improved himself to below average. :D:

defensively they are pretty bad. Im more concerned about offensively this year, they should be in the minor leagues.....
