Over on FutureSox, they were postulating that the SOX draft strategery was to pick college players early, and high school players late in the draft. Their thought was that there is a big difference between a top ten round college player in the 1st 10 rounds and a college player in the last 10 rounds; For high school players, often there is scant difference between players drafted early and late.

I'm not suggesting this is a good plan or the right way to go, but it was nonetheless an interesting/optimistic take.

What happened to some of the posts that were in this thread? Were they deleted? Crawdad suggested renaming this thread to include a "2011" in the title, and I responded, but now said posts are gone. Weird.

White Sox 2nd round pick Erik Johnson should be pitching tonight for Cal against Dallas Baptist on ESPNU at 9 CST. 6th round pick, SS Marcus Semien and 13th round pick, C Chadd Krist should be playing as well for Cal.

Semien and Krist both in the lineup as well.

Johnson looks pretty average so far. It seems like he doesn't know where his pitches are going.

Seems to me that Erik Johnson's stuff isn't nearly as good as it is when he's at his best. Could be fatigue of season catching up with him.

Just hopefully he isn't sitting there expecting money for where he thought he would be picked. It sounds like he is real excited to be with us though. A hometown guy, he may just want to get a deal done and get started.

We can always use good pen help, and it looks like we got some in this draft. If Gardeck works hard and progresses in his pitching career, he could be a good reliever.

10: Ben O’Shea

Gardeck seems to want over slot and it will probably go to the deadline. O'Shea says he is going to attend the University of Maryland, but he might be posturing for more money that the Sox probably won't give him. I expect Krist to sign. I have nothing on Soptic or Ginther.

That's really too bad. I was hoping Krist would sign. I liked what I saw from him in the College WS.

I am also disappointed by the lack of HS signings. I really liked the SOX approach in this draft with all the high schools draftees in the late rounds. But it appears they'll sign just a couple of them. I realize that some of these may be hard signs, but still...only 2 or 3? Pretty disappointing.

I still have my fingers crossed that they might sign Dakota Freese. I'm not going to hold my breath though.

It will be interesting to see the spread on draft spending. Many teams are splurging because of the threat of hard slotting next year. Toronto is going nuts. Some expect them to be end up totaling near $15 million. Conversely, without doing any math I would expect the White Sox to end in the $3.5 to $5 million range somewhere near the bottom.

You might get your wish. The Sox seem hopeful that they will ink 29th rounder JC OF Dustin Hayes. I don't have time to research him at this point, but any additional signings are welcome.

The Pirates set a draft record by spending $17,005,700 on bonuses. Including money in big league deals, the Nationals spent $17,602,100. The White Sox spent the least of any team in the draft: $2,756,300 on bonuses.

Well that certainly makes a compelling case as to why the Sox are morons for not spending like crazy in the Draft. We need to restructure this operation to be more like the Pirates.

Come on Doub, you know better than that.

Handy dandy chart showing slot sums of the first ten rounds and slot spent for each team. Results are unsurprising.

Side-effect of the bloated and unsustainable major league payroll... draft and sign conservatively. :(:

The Pirates have a solid record of developing good young players. They just trade them away before they reach their potential at the major league level.

The Pirates set a draft record by spending $17,005,700 on bonuses. Including money in big league deals, the Nationals spent $17,602,100. The White Sox spent the least of any team in the draft: $2,756,300 on bonuses.

No surprise.

With their track record in the last decade in both drafting and developing talent, I really don't blame them for not giving out large bonus money that they have little chance of getting a return on.
