Typical Joe West. He has to be the center of attention and will go out of his way to be in the spotlight.

My take: As a child he probably was never able to satisfy daddy, and is still seeking his approval and/acceptance. He was also probably picked on as a child and is still trying to get back at the world by throwing his authority around whenever he has the chance.

There should be a psychological test for umpires during the hiring process.

He needs to go. West's umpiring has been going south for many years.

And should ultimately result in dismissal, unless you work for a company like my former, which actually rewards such behavior.

And should ultimately result in dismissal, unless you work for a company like my former, which actually rewards such behavior. You'd be surprised how many companies operate that way. There are good reasons why the workplace has become such a stressful grind for so many. On another note, Commissioner Selig needs to address this matter forcefully. Umpires used to be for the most part happy to call a good game and quietly move on the next one. Now some of them think they are the game.

I was going to post about the Joe West crew after I saw the Boston incident this morning on MLB Network but I knew Fenway would be on it. :D:

There has hardly been a day that goes by now that I don't see a highlight on MLB Network that involves a manager scrum with Joe West's crew this season so far. It's getting beyond ridiculous now.

Really, you shouldn't even know the umpires' names. They should be more or less invisible.

This "look at me" crap started with Ron Luciano back when. Now they want to be stars.

They can hardly do their job, much less be stars. Small wonder organists used to play 3 Blind Mice so much.

Well see what if anything Joe Torre does on this, supposedly part of his job is to get the umpires back in line.

West looked real good today.....

Youk called out stealing second....West emphatic on call...then Youk goes back to bag...West still says you are out....

It was Ball 4

Twins manager goes bonkers after West has to let Youk stay at second

This is news to me. The ESPN players poll from 2010 rated him just ahead of CB Bucknor (the worst).

Join the freakin' club. Mark Beuhrle has 2 (count 'em,2) career ejections.
Guess who tossed him both times? He's also been called at least twice for balks on pickoff moves by you know who.

Joe West is such a jackass. Youkilis ran as Lowrie walked. Country Joe, clueless, called Youkilis out. Then safe, then out. He was safe

I'm not a big fan of instant replays or automating the officiating, but Joe West and Hunter Wendelstadt do make me reconsider my position.

I saw in the highlights that they called another balk against a Boston pitcher last night and then they threw out Gardenhire. Everyone on this umpiring crew needs to be fired, it is absolutely no coincidence that all of Buerhle's balks last year came with Joe West's crew.

Wasn't the ejection against Baltimore when Buehrle hit someone with a breaking ball to end his streak of starts of 6+ innings done by Brian Gorman?

Yep. For allegedly throwing at B.J. Surhoff.

He warned Gardenhire last night not to cross the line between the grass and the dirt area around the batter's box. Gardenhire did and was immediately ejected before he said a word.

Apparently, according to Joe, that area is "his." What an *******.

Perhaps that now ESPNs Boston Red Sox have a taste of Joe West, maybe MLB will do something about it.

Doubtful, however.

We had a radio announcer fired because MLB was sick of his anti Joe West rants on the air.

Jerry Trupiano hasn't beeen able to find a MLB job since.

Francona is really seething now

http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2011/05/12/francona_fined_for_ejection/

He takes another shot at West after getting fined by MLB

I did not know that West is the leader of the union for the umpires...that may explain why MLB just lets him do his thing...

Does it seem ludicrous to anyone else that you can't seek an explanation for a balk call? Arguing balls and strikes I get but a balk is a mechanical issue that the umpire should be able to explain what they saw.
