I really don't care any more. People are going to point to the bunt, but even without that does anyone think we would have won this game? I don't. This is just a bad baseball team and we are finding ways to lose games. If we weren't hitting that would be one thing, but we aren't hitting, we aren't fielding and we aren't running the bases well. The pitching seems to be okay which is too bad.

I am really liking Humber. I don't think he's thrown a bad game yet!

Quentin with another Sox solo home run.

Pierre was productive with the bat.

Thornton gets the loss pitching in his second consecutive inning. (Before the 9th inning started, Darren Jackson said he didn't like Thornton pitching a second consecutive inning.

Rios with another 0-4 night.

It's not like he was trying to close it out. He was trying to keep it tied, there were a few lefties he was facing so I guess that's why he was out there instead of Sale, but...I don't know. I don't think it mattered who we had out there.

Funny, I have these games on, sit in front of them, but can hardly watch. If I make it past the first few innings, I end up turning off the sound more often than not. And I can't watch each pitch anymore. I think I'm weaning myself off this team...

A few signs of life from the offense - Juan, Gordon, Carlos looked alive. Humber was terrific. Thornton a solid 8th. But damn it, Ozzie left Thornton in too long. I could see bringing Thornton back out for the 9th to start...but I saw Sale warming up. Why not bring him or Santos in? Sheesh.

Ah well, tomorrow is another day.

In all seriousness, Ozzie should be fired for allowing Humber to pitch to Smoak. Another fail by the manager in Baseball 101.

And A.J. should have made sure on his own that Humber pitched around Smoak.

Instead, for reasons unknown, we pitch to Seattle's hottest hitter with first base open and let him drive in the go-ahead run.

Ridiculous.

Stupid arrogance by Ozzie and A.J.

File this in the ever-increasing folder of "Games We Would Have Won If We Had A Competent Manager." I'm finding it harder and harder to spend three hours a day watching this nonsense. He pulled Thornton from the closer's role after the 12th game. That's pretty ****ing early and then he went to the guy everyone thought would be able to close games too, Sale. Then he went to Santos.

Now if the question was why Thornton was in there tonight I would guess it's because you had Smoak who has struggled against lefties and then Cust, Wilson and Saunders, two of whom are lefties. And I guess that Ozzie just doesn't have a lot of faith in Sale. I can't blame him too much for that either.

Perhaps if this team were capable of executing Guillen's play for 1 run theories, it might make some sense late in the game. But it isn't - it lacks the skill and the mental focus (hello coaching)...how many time has this team failed to get the runner on 3rd home with 0 or 1 outs? Routinely.
This game also attests to Williams best skill as GM - small moves and signings. His "blockbuster" trades are usually abject disasters.

Agree 100% Throw in the fact that the guy who had 2 hits tonight was sac bunting (Pierre), and it makes even less sense given the situation. This team needs all three outs to get a run in from scoring position. Moving the runner to 3rd with 1 out with THIS offense is a disaster. It never works yet we keep doing it.

lol they intentionally walk a gagootz like cuddyer and pitch to Smoak? And bunted again with a guy that actually had 2 hits tonight against the same pitcher he was facing when he bunted, after a double? For a team that can't hit they sure make a lot of outs on purpose. And made another bad base running play? And had Thornton pitching in the ninth inning? I'm surprised they only lost by one. Good job!

The bullpen was fully rested after the off day. There was no reason to stretch Thornton for 40 pitches and 2 innings tonight. Darrin Jackson even pointed out on the radio tonight that the Sox should keep an eye on Thornton's velocity in the 9th since he had thrown so many pitches and it was dipping to 94. This is precisely when the M's starting hitting him. He should have been pulled as soon as Cust got on with the hit but instead he was left out there to lose the game with Santos, Crain, Sale, and Ohman rested in the bullpen. So damn frustrating.

True, but that's not the point. The point is we could have won THIS game scoring only 2 runs...if we had a competent manager. Hindsight is not relevant in this case. There is NO justification for pitching to Smoak. Even my girlfriend who was half asleep on the couch wondered why we would pitch to him before he drove in the run. Heck, even Steve Stone, who's been prone to bite his tongue or even be a Sox apologist since coming to the South Side, took a shot at Ozzie after Smoak burned us.

Same old ****. Opponent scores all 3 of their runs with 2 outs, Sox can't drive in a run with 2 outs to save their miserable lives.
I actually had no problem with Pierre bunting. Late in a tie game, and Pierre has been horrid with men in scoring position, though so has everyone else on this lousy team. And I can't believe Thornton was brought out for a second inning, and that isn't hindsight. The way he's pitched this year, Ozzie should have left well enough alone. But, as some have mentioned here, it just saved us the aggravation of losing in extra innings. At this point, even if this team should somehow turn things around and go on a hot streak, they are now digging themselves too big a hole to get out of.

It doesn't matter what we do. We don't score. We can't bring them in from third with less than two outs and we can't bring them in from second with no outs.
I can't dispute what you wrote here...however, I would at least like to see a guy who has 2 hits in the game TRY to drive a runner who has decent speed home from 2nd base with 0 outs. The sac bunt is the proverbial white flag of the inning for the 2011 White Sox.

You know what REALLY sucks about this? With the Cubs having a down year and expected to have a down year we could have made it a Sox town (even if only for a year), but it feels a lot like 2007.
Do you really care about that right now? We have much bigger issues. If our play is why Chicago doesn't become a Sox fan, that's the way it should be.

Looks like Ozzie has second thoughts about sending Humber to the pen: http://espn.go.com/blog/chicago/white-sox/post/_/id/4765/white-soxs-humber-to-stay-in-rotation

I caught the 9th inning (yay!), so I saw the loss, but what is the bad base running people keep mentioning? Did someone get picked off?

Is Thornton on the hook now for 5 losses or is it more? Unreal. The guy needs to be babied until he gains the team's trust. Instead, they try to squeeze another inning out of him. Ponderous.

And for the love of all things holy, can we PLEASE stop giving up outs? This strategy should only be employed when the team is out of it's collective funk and actually hitting the ball. To do it now is foolish.

Lastly, the Cell will be tumbleweeds this Summer. What a shame. It'll be a cold day in hell before JR goes "all in" again so prepare yourself for salary dumping (those that can be dumped) and "the kids can play" slogans. Sadly, the farm system is so putrid that we can't even get excited about a youth movement.

Folks you know the drill:

Sox now 4-18 in last 22 games...

19th time Sox have scored 3 runs or less (17th time in last 21 games)...

8th time Sox have lost holding an opponent to 3 runs or less...

4-11 in games decided by 1 or 2 runs...

But Kenny says everyone's job is safe.

**** them, **** them all, every single one of these clowns.

Watching the bottom of the ninth actually made me laugh. Jokes. Straight up.

Such good jokes that comcast went straight to the BULLS postgame show instead of a sox postgame show. Which helped me forget about all this hot ass mess of a baseball team/org.

The manager was sleeping in the dugout tonight. He hung Matt Thornton out to dry. He hung his team out to dry.

The Sox are bad enough without the clownish decision-making in the dugout.

The players are failing, and the manager is not putting them in the best position to succeed.

Do we really need to go through another terrible road trip to realize change is needed?

At 11-22, I never thought I'd see the team get off to just as bad or worse start than they did in '01 when they started 14-29. This team could do that. They could even have a worse stretch than the '07 team you mentioned that went 5-22 from 5/27 to 6/27. With two AAA guys in the lineup, platooned with Teahen, along with four others batting below or just above .200, who knows when the misery will end.

It's like watching a drug addict self destruct. If the organization doesn't care enough to help itself by making a change, then I'm not sure I can continue supporting it.

As much as I like AJ, pitch selection sometimes seems suspect at best. Even Harrelson in the booth talked about how the Sox knew Smoak could turn on fastballs up in the zone. He almost tomahawked a homerun earlier in the game on a similar pitch. Why would Harrelson know the scouting report on this guy but our catcher wouldn't? (unless Hawk is talking out of his behind after the fact).

Didn't watch the Sox game last night because I haven't been feeling well lately. Saw the final score this morning and was not surprised. I'm gonna try to enjoy my Mother's Day weekend, despite the sad state of the Sox right now.

Two things...

1. Why didn't Ozzie intentionally walk, or let Humber pitch around Smoak?

2. Why on earth was Thornton in there for two innings? We had a fully rested pen with two other lefties in it. Even when Thornton was struggling with runners on second and third with the game on the line, he still kept him in.

...oh, and speaking of AJ, is anyone starting to question whether or not AJ can cut it as a professional baseball player anymore? He's not a particularly good catcher, he doesn't hit much anymore, and a lot of him famous "Dennis the Menace" attributes we haven't seen in a few years.

I'm not going to blame the offense on this one because we were up against Felix, who is one of the best pitchers in the game.

Sure...lets destroy Thornton's confidence even more by letting him go two full and take the loss. Awsome....

**** that, he needs to be responsible for giving up boatloads of runs. Granted, Ozzie should be fired for his mishandling of the pen. But that's besides the point....

Ozzie in the newspapers today said the issue last night was between Cox and Beckham... that he told them, 'make sure the ball goes through...'

Another cranial rectal inversion moment by a team that has done this by the boatload since July 2006.

And why was Thornton allowed to go that long? Isn't 37 pitches a bit too many?

But, Ozzie is the face of the franchise.

I'm glad our manager and hitting coach have no accountability no matter how bad a talented team sucks. We may as well give Ozzie and Walker lifetime contracts.

I'm willing to bet that the fans get thrown under the bus (for not supporting an unbelievable unwatchable team) long before the manager and coaches are held accountable for this complete fiasco of a season.
