So does that leave the competitions as:

4th OF/Util: Milledge/Lillibridge

Last Pitcher/Peavy Fill-in: Humber/Marquez

Yep.

Almost certain that Humber is the 5th starter and Marquez is in the pen. The battle of Millibridge is the only remaining decision.

Agreed, but I can't imagine Milledge not making it at this point. With Lillibridge out of options, they may just be trying to make a minor trade before they have to set the roster...or better yet, find somebody to take Teahen.

Marquez in the pen?

Wonder how long that will last. I give it until the third week.

Nobody named "Mark Teahen" is on the list. (http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20110322&content_id=17070234&vkey=news_cws&c_id=cws&partnerId=rss_cws)

The roster is at 29.

I just can't see the relevance of options to picking which utility ballplayer to keep.
Wouldn't we lose Milledge too anyway?

We wouldn't lose Milledge cause he was signed to a minor league contract.

That is a bit surprising, since it looked to me like Bruney was looking at least decent as an extra reliever, and certainly better than Marquez.

They're probably just keeping Marquez up until they know what's up with Peavy.

Thanks for the clarification.
Regardless, Lillibridge isn't particularly valuable.

Let's hope they don't have to use Jeff "Mop Up Man" Marquez a lot before he gets released.

He is flat out bad.

He can refuse a minor league assignment, which will effectively terminate his contract.

In one of the articles I read Milledge said he would accept a minor league assignment.

The Battle of Millibridge is the only remaining decision.
I believe that was taken by the British in 1777.

If you're a stickler for grammar and spelling, you might want to look away.

Mark Gonzales is reporting tonight the Sox may be changing plans regarding the pitching staff and may now be going back to 11 due to the way Marquez looked against the Angels.

I have a feeling neither Marquez or Humber is going to be the answer until Peavy can get back on the mound.

Fine with me. Marquez is garbage, and Humber isn't much better. Some organizational pitching depth would be nice Kenny.

I have more confidence in Humber because he has added that cutter and up until the Cubs start he had actually pitched pretty decently. He was the third overall pick in the draft so he has some ability and hasn't put it together yet. I'm not saying he will but I'm willing to see what Coop can do with him for the 1st month of the season.

I agree. Humber at least looks like he has good stuff and has some talent pedigree being a high draft pick. Marquez has been hot garbage and looked especially bad today against an Angels lineup filled with mostly minor league players.

Team cannot announce who is placed on waivers, so secrecy of roster after Saturday's game makes sense.

If true, I'm glad they did this. Milledge deserves to be on the team the way he played. Also I like Lillibridge's ability to play around the field and pinch run if needed. He'll probably be gone in a month though.

I wish they'd cut Teahen when Jake gets back, but I think the only reason they'll hang onto him is because he's left handed.

Yea, I don't understand the consternation over extra pitcher vs. hitter. The pitchers in the mix are all dime-a-dozen, minor-leaguers.

Keep Lillibridge and Milledge and make the hard decision when and if you need to bring a pitcher up.

There are valid points on either side of the coin. My concern is that Humber isn't necessarily a lock to give you 5 or 6 innings every time out and I'd hate to see the Sox have to frequently burn up their short relievers for 2 inning outings so early in the season. We saw how losing our main setup men last year (Putz and Thornton) helped to torpedo the season. Ideally, you'd like to limit their workload in April. I guess the Sox figure Tony Pena will eat some innings in the long man role if such an occasion arises. With any luck, Humber and the rest of the staff pitch well and this will be a moot point.

The schedule works out that we'd only need Humber to start 3-4 times the entire month of April and keep the other SP on regular rest, so I think this is a good roll of the dice.

I was at the game on Saturday when Marquez started against the Angels, and he looked awful. It's probably for the best that he got cut.

I like both Lillibridge and Milledge on the bench. Lillibridge brings some versatility defensively and speed, and Milledge (hopefully) provides some offense. Still, I'm worried about everyone in the bullpen outside of Thornton and Crain. So I think that gives us...

Buehrle, Danks, Floyd, Jackson, Humber
Ohman, Pena, Santos, Sale, Crain, Thornton

Teahen, Vizquel, Milledge, Lillibridge

ShooterMcGavin

I like the move keeping both Lillibridge and Milledge on the roster. Lillibridge is expendable if the Sox had a good relief pitcher to take the 12th man role. Since the Sox don't, Lillibridge is on the roster and that's fine with me.

I'm just hoping Humber doesn't crap the bed.
