I would think the Cubs are trying to dangle a carrot in front of him to stop showing up to games hung over. Supposedly Mr. Wells parties hard.

He admited this. Going out to Wrigleville until 3 AM the night before a day game isn't recommended.

I like Wells and thought he did a good job for them in 2009 and had a bit of blip in 2010 which I sort of expected. As others have noted, he might be fighting for a spot because of some clubhouse and personal issues rather than pitching issues.

He's still the next best choice. I can't see him going to AAA or not being in the rotation come opening day.

He is fighting for a spot because the Cubs have amazing depth at the SP position. They have no fewer than eight potential Cy Young arms on their roster as I type this.
