LHP Matt Thornton signs 2-year (2012-2013) extension with #WhiteSox (http://twitter.com/search?q=%23WhiteSox) with club option for 2014. half a minute ago (http://twitter.com/whitesox/status/44446961952235520) via TweetDeck (http://www.tweetdeck.com/):bandance::bandance:

He's older, but certainly doesn't show any signs of losing his fastball. I like it.

I think it's a good preemptive move since he could play a major role with the Sox this year. If he ends up being the closer and has a great year, he'd be in demand on the open market. Obviously we'll have to see the money, but I like it.

EDIT: Two years, $12 million.

I think this is good for a number of reasons. Thornton has bee arguably the biggest bargain in baseball for the last several years. Nice to see the Sox pony up and give him his payday in advance of whatever happens these next few years.

Just be careful not to over use him and he should be a major part of the bullpen until this contract expires.

Good move on the Sox part.

Good move on the Sox part. If he has a big year as the closer this year 6M could end up being a bargain.

He was going to be in huge demand after this season no matter the circumstances.

Very nice deal.

That leaves one more left-hander that the Sox need to lock up, and no, I'm not referring to the one with two no-hitters.

I think the Sox need to have a great season this year to have a good shot.

It's always a risk when dealing with bullpen guys but Thornton has been consistent so I think this is worth the risk

Awesome, and good for Thornton. He seems like a good guy, and most importantly, he has earned it.

The Sox absolutely stole him from Seattle. Great to see him locked up for a few more years.

Nice move.

Thornton will attain 10 years of MLB service on June 27, 2014. Assuming he's still with the Sox then, he would acquire 10-5 rights.

Nice...Whenever he comes in, I'm confident he'll leave the ball in the closer's hands in good standing.

I'm so happy to hear about this deal. It's affordable, and he has earned it. It also gives us a great option for 2014 at $6 million.

I like this. Only two years is a smart move because you never know with bullpen guys. And Thornton definitely earned the bump in salary.

I love this...everytime they've said "they're out on a limb" or "at their limit" they pony up more dough.....:):bandance:

The only 2 positives in the career of Joe Borchard:

1) Longest HR in the history of US Celluar
2) Enabled Sox to obtain Matt Thornton

Great move. Matt is arguably the best LH reliever this team has ever had coming out of the bullpen. He deserves it.

This extension doesn't affect the 2011 payroll as far as I can tell and doesn't conflict with KW's "we're at our limit" comments. Thornton's deal is for 2012-13.

2011's success on the field and at the gate will determine what the Sox "limit" is for 2012. The contracts for Buehrle, Jackson, and Pierre end after this year. Plus we'll no longer be eating part of Linebrink's salary after this year. On the other hand, a number of remaining players get raises in 2012 over 2011.

As far this this extension goes, I'm with everyone else in giving this a thumbs up

It's an extension for 2012-2013, it doesn't affect this year's payroll.

But that still means that the payroll for 2012 and 2013 is going to be higher than it is now, especially considering the backloaded contracts we have, no?

Not necessarily, between Buehrle, Jackson, and Pierre, we have $31 M coming off the books after this season.
