View Full Version : If You Were In Charge of MLB - What One Uniform Rule Would You Enforce?

If you could follow the lead of the NFL with mandatory uniform consistency rules, what one rule would you introduce and/or enforce in MLB?

I for one am growing tired of the over-baggy, extra long pants legs (under spikes) look. As a result, I would have a new socks/stirrups rule come into effect where every player has to show/display an agree on minimum amount. For the White Sox, I would love to see them actually wear white socks with no stirrups, however I know that's a pipe dream. Players who have physiques like Frank Thomas, Prince Fielder, etc., would have a tought time with knee high socks though. :o:

Sorry, after seeing the A's retro jersey and picture of a young Reggie Jackson, I miss the throwback look.

Limit alternate jerseys once a week, and can't play alternate vs alternate ever.

The Mets and Marlins can't wear those hideous black uniforms ever again. They have to revert to the old days, when teal ruled. The Mets need the 80s return of pinstripes.

So what would be the rule that would be consistent across MLB? To restrict alternate jerseys to the main colors of the team? I agree that black has been overused (although it looks great for the SOX considering it is a primary color), however my question is not team specific, rather uniform consistent throughout the league.

The stirrup look developed in the 60s and 70s, guys like Frank Robinson and Joe Morgan. The thinking was more stirrup made you look skinnier. The reason they wore stirrups in the first place was because the dye from the colored sock would infect your feet as it bled from all the sweat. Their feet would be all dried out and cut up.

I'd go with high socks, no stirrup showing.

I'm against that 2nd rule because of heritage games like the one the White Sox played against KC where they wore Negro League uniforms. I also like when teams commemorate a World Series by each wearing throwbacks like the 1959 night in June 2005 vs. the Dodgers.

I'm fine with limiting alternates. The black tops are way overused by the Sox.

I'm not counting turn-back-the-clock type games, which are fine once or twice a year. I just don't like the solid color jerseys head-to-head. Looks like spring training.

In addition, the BLUE Jays must ditch the black on their uniforms entirely.

Does that also hold true for the Chicago WHTE Sox?

Exactly. I hate it when the Sox wear their black while the Twins, Indians, Royals wear blue, or the A's green.

I agree, they should look like ballplayers, not thugs.

Also, home teams should remove the names on back of jerseys. Home team fans should know who their players are. Sox did this in early '90s, right after they changed uniforms to the current style.

It's great for the casual fan, and for the road fans.

I'm on the side of bringing back stirrups (but not the high-cut stirrups) with a minimum amount of them showing.

If at the park, they can't hear Gene Honda announce the player's name or look at the various scorboards showing his name?

If watching on TV, they can't read the graphic showing his name?

The names were taken off the home and road uniforms after the '86 season. The '87 season was the begining of the "White Sox" script unis that lasted through 1990. For some reason, the Sox added names to the backs of the road unis halfway through the 1990 season (not talking about the new road unis they wore for the final road trip to Boston that year, but the '87-'90 version).

The names didn't come back to the home uniforms until 1997.

Would that include coaches? The Tigers are represented by Tom Brookens, a guy who has to go into the moustache HOF.

And no team that doesn't have black as their primary/alternate color is allowed to wear or sell merchandise in a "black" setting.

On "turn back the clock" dates, the Nationals should wear Expos uniforms.

I agree with the straight hat thing. Alternate jerseys don't bother me. Plain old gray vs. white every game is boring IMO.

Also, they can not speak to the ump without first saying "Fair sir, I do declare that..."

Still trying to figure out who the catcher is you're referring to...

I'm calling for uniform anarchy, all rules ignored. I want to see a player playing in facepaint with a full length ZZ Top beard, just for the sake of fun.

Though the San Diego padres should install a small jungle in left field at Petco to make their camouflage uniforms seem appropriate.

I would like to see a "turn back the clock" night where not only teams play in classic uniforms, but everybody in attendance comes dressed up (like mentioned), and only organ music is played. Optional no use of jumbotrons. It will never happen, but it would be really cool. Oh yeah, and tickets for this game would be a dime.
