There is absolutely more to this then just a straight up Napoli/Wells swap.

And here is some source help since there hasn't been one posted. Rivera might be involved as well.

I wonder how much cash? Wells has one hefty contract.

That's a pretty good trade for the Blue Jays! Get rid of that awful young contact, and pick up Rivera and Napoli. I wonder what they plan on doing with Napoli and their other young catching prospect J.P. whatever his name is.

I agree. Mike Napoli is a good hitter. His defensive skills are not great but the Jays will likely find a way to move him around the diamond (catch, play 1B, DH). Juan Rivera is a good hitter, too.

While the Jays part with Vernon Wells, it sounds as if they going to get some salary relief and that can only help them address other needs. From the Jays' point of view, this has to be a better deal than just letting Alex Rios go to the Sox on a waiver claim.

Napoli probably becomes their DH. He could hit 30+ HRs with 550 ABs.

No money changing hands. Jays are thrilled. Talk about a ****ty offseason for the Halos.

Wow, I never would have thought the Jays could dump both Rios' and Wells' contracts! I guess no contract is untradeable in this league.

I can't get over how terrible this trade is. Poor Angels fans. I've yet to see a favorable reaction to this trade for LA. It's being bashed everywhere by everyone.

Miss out on anything and everything? Take on almost the entirety of a terrible contract for the definition of a platoon hitter who hasn't been able to hit outside Toronto.

Breakdown of Wells remaining contract:

2011: $23 million
2012: $21 million
2013: $21 million
2014: $21 million

Yuck.

What an awful move by the Angels. Don't they already have 11 outfielders?

That is an obscene amount of money for Vernon Wells.

Wow, what a great move for the Blue Jays. This could open up such opportunity for them in the future, and they've already got a good base.

I kinda like this Jays team.

I don't know if Vernon Wells is all washed up, but he sure was not woth the cabbage he was making. No idea what the Angels see out of this deal, but the Jays could do a lot with that contract off the books.

Vernon Wells away from Rogers Centre last year: .227/.301/.407. Good luck with that LAAA.

A good trade for the Angels

You are kidding, right?!

Toronto got out of that contract. Anthopoulos is a genius for doing that. He's the Canadian Ken Williams. In fact, he gave KW one of those contracts. Rios played well last year, but he's overpaid.

I feel like that's all they make an effort for in the marketplace, are outfielders. They're still paying Gary Matthews Jr. $11 mil this season! :o:

When I first heard of this trade, I had to ask how many millions the Blue Jays had to pony up each year. If it's zero...wow! Now he could pan out for the Angels, but he's going to have to have quite the next few years to come close to being worth $86 million over the next four years.

I can't believe the Angels made this deal. Wells is still a very good player but not worth his contract.

The Angels could afford to part with the players they gave up and are now a better team but that is not a good use of $ 22 mil. a year for 4 years.

The Angels should have insisted on Toronto paying $ 6 mil. per year of that contract and it would be a fair deal.

Angels were pretty desperate. Even though he is overpaid he is still an effective player. Over the course of the contract he is probably more likely to be effective than the other worst contract player available, Alfonso Soriano, even though Soriano would have been slightly cheaper over the 4 years.

Congrats to Toronto for getting that monkey off their back. With some of the talent they have coming up and the financial flexibility they have coming they could compete soon. Looking forward to it.

That headline is hysterical!

Indeed. It's also quite true.

Career Lines:

Wells: .280/.329/.475
Rivera: .280/.328/.461

I really like what Anthropolous has done so far with Toronto.

So is there anyone left in Toronto?

The Jays actually have a solid roster. Marcum was an injury risk and the Wells/Rios contracts would have prevented the Jays from extending a lot of their young talent. If several of the Jays young players pan out they have a chance to be a force in the AL East.

It seems that every year they bring in another outfielder: Gary Matthews jr., Torii Hunter, Bobby Abreu, Vernon Wells. They might be signing Pods too.

I wish Kenny would have offered Quentin, Linebrink and Teahen for Wells earlier this winter. That would have been a nice deal for both sides.
