Hello,

Does anyone have any info at all- anything- about that contest the White Sox ran in 1981 to submit uniform ideas? There were all sorts of crazy ideas.

For one, I thought there was an article on it here- can't find it.

Secondly, any other info would be appreciated.

I'm doing a research project.

Good lord, they were all hideous. The winner was obviously slightly modified from the second from left. Here's the story on WSI you were thinking of: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas/index.php?category=3&id=2104

On the WSI Homepage their is a uniform guide link. It includes details about the uniform contest of 1981 and includes some of the submitted drawings, etc.

:o: It's like someone put in the 70s era Houston Astros, Montreal Expos, Pittsburgh Pirates and San Diego Padres uniforms in a blender and this was the result!

It was a long time ago and I was pretty young, but I seem to remember there being a card that you filled out - and I believe you could do it multiple times. Funny, I remember thinking there were some cool ones. I remembered wrong.

The Teal/Orange jersey on the left might have worked for the Marlins. The jersey in the middle looks like a sweater vest Mike Ditka would wear and the jersey on the right should be used for the Joliet Slammers team.

I remember they gave away ballots at the ballpark, similar to All-Star ballots. I remember filling one out and they offered a write-in comment. My write-in comment was to bring back the 1959-era black/red uniforms. I think the local papers also included some ballots to mail in.

I was pushing retro before retro was cool!

I was 11 years old, I voted for #5, the Astros look alike. Still one of my favorite uniforms of all time. No matter how ugly it is.

I have the original color voting handout somewhere.

I remeber watching a game on TV, and they showed the finalists, like in the above photo. I remember it being a night game later in the '81 season, after the strike. Good Lord, that was 30 years ago!

I don't remeber if there was anyway for TV viewers to phone in a vote, or if we were expected to mail in our entry.

The funny thing is that they would have been better off keeping the uniforms they had instead of the one that replaced it.

I didn't mind the '87-'90 uniform change, I just would have changed the hat from a "C/E" to the Sox batter logo.

If you go to Sports Illustrated's "The Vault" they have some of the submissions, one of them was a uniform made entirely out of white socks and another was a caveman thing.

As I recall, Harry recorded a short videotape where he read the voting rules as the six guys wearing the sample uniforms walked in front of the camera. The tape was broadcast during several game telecasts during the '81 season.

I think the ballots were printed in the Sun-Times and you could fill them out and mail them in.

Here's a 1981 SI article about the uniform contest judging:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1124532/index.htm (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1124532/index.htm)

"Sixteen hundred entries, huh?" mused ace Reliever Ed Farmer. "That means there were 1,600 improvements on what we have now."

You can also click on "View this issue" and check out pages 30-31 for a look at a photos and a couple of the gag entries.

I have this same brochure somewhere in my collection I could scan it and post it if it helps. The Sox also had a variety of uni protoypes on display in 1976 when Bill Veeck tookover the team, I dont remember if it was a fan contest or how they are selected. I have one of the prototypes jerseys that was not selected - it was similar to the Veeck style softball jerseys with a collar but if had a big number on the chest - its interesting but i am glad they didnt select that style. I can post a photo of it if interested.

That SI article is interesting in that it mentions one of the contest requirements was to not alter the old Swinging Sox logo. That's probably the reason so many of the designs looked the same. The S-O-X on the hats and jerseys was basically the same one in that logo.

There were very different concepts of cool back in 1981.

They were certainly futuristic, that's for sure! Looks more appropriate for the "Turn ahead the clock" games of 1999.

I liked the Bill Veeck-era uniforms with the collars. The 1982 uniform was a 180 step in the opposite direction.

I'm sure this has been brought up before and maybe it is outside the scope of WSI but I think it would be intersting to have a thread or forum that would display photos of unique or significant White Sox game jerseys. Maybe the "jersey of the week" photo or some other method... I am a long time White Sox jersey collector and I am sure there are many other WSIer's that collect too and it might be interesting for others to see some of the old flannels, the various styles, etc and compare notes learn more about the history etc. Thoughts?

It wouldn't. All it would do is create a headache for the moderating staff when a certain number of posters inevitably start trying to buy and sell stuff here. Check out Gameuseduniverse if you want to talk about old jerseys, but there's plenty of deals gone bad there to give a glimpse of what a headache it can become. Or, as mentioned, look at the excellent Uniform Watch.

When the new ownership bought the team before the 1981 season they had more complaints about the White Sox uniforms than anything else. The uniforms were designed by the Veeck family before the 1976 season. Those uniforms were one of the ugliest uniforms in all of sports. Between the 1971-75 seasons the White Sox had the popular white and red uniforms which still look good today. The fans and the players didn't like the uniforms Veeck came up with in 1976. Veeck was too stubborn of a man to admit he made a mistake with those ugly uniforms. Then again, that was common for him. He would never admit to making any type of a mistake in anything he did. I was happy when he sold the White Sox. Looking back at that whole situation, I think White Sox fans would of been happy if they went back to the uniform from 1971-75 instead of having a uniform contest. Being a season Ticket holder, the White Sox sent me a gift last month which was the home jersey from 1971-75 and it still looks great.

They sent my dad one as well, and then for Christmas my mom had a #14 sewn onto the back, sans name. They did a really good job, too.

I was just looking at those uniforms from the 50's and I never really noticed the red trim. I think that would look good even on the uniforms they have now.

I think it's kinda cool that Harold Baines played in 4 different uniforms for the Sox. Although I think Luke Appling played in 5 different ones though.

I'd like to see how their uniforms of today would have fared against the others in that selection process had it been one of the choices (this is just hypothetical). I'd like to think they would have won by a landslide, but you never know....

I remember when the story broke about the SOX rolling out new uniforms for the opening of New Comiskey Park, I immediately thought "here we go again". To me, the late 80s red/blue "White Sox" script uniforms were OK and a definite improvement over the previous two sets of uniforms, but after seeing the photo of (then) manager Jeff Torborg, Carlton Fisk and Ozzie Guillen modeling the new (current) silver/black uniforms, I was blown away and immediately thought that they finally got it right! I then bought the new black/white cap as soon as it came out!
