They are replacing the Jackhammers. (http://www.nbcchicago.com/news/sports/joliet-frontier-league-baseball-113492074.html) The name is a play on the state Penitentiary there.

I was actually wondering if they would use the prison when naming the new team, and am quite shocked that they did.

So what do you think the new unis will look like?

In Arizona, Yuma High School sports teams are the Criminals because the high school initially used administration buildings from the recently decommissioned Yuma Territorial Prison.

Corrections is probably a major employer in Joliet. I don't think Slammers is such a bad name for a minor league baseball team, especially considering it has a baseball meaning.

Funny thing is there is no prison open in Joliet. Joliet Correctional (the place that held Joliet Jake) closed in early 2000's. Statesville is actually in Crest Hill.

And I really like the new name, it rhymes with the old name and it is a double entendre.

According to the article, "Slammers" wasn't even the top vote-getter in their name-the-team contest. "Jailbirds" got the most votes, but it also got the most negative feedback.

Whatever. Is a new name going to turnaround their attendance woes? The problem in Chicagoland is that there are too many minor league teams now. Joliet isn't the only one in trouble, I believe the Schaumburg Flyers are in financial trouble too.

The Joliet Penitentiary closed down years ago.

The Joliet Penitentiary closed down years ago.

So, like the Yuma High School Criminals, the nickname is historical, although at least one former Yuma High School athlete resides on Arizona's Death Row. (Not to be negative, I don't think Curley Culp and countless others have ever been in trouble.)

Slammers really isn't a bad name.

Don't drive around much in Illinois in the summer, I guess? :neener:

I vaguely remember it being a reference to Joliet's past as a quarry town and stone producer.

I know that the front design for the stadium (Silver Cross Field) is supposed to represent the iron bridges over the river downtown.
