1 year deal. 3 mil plus 3 mil in incentives.

Not a bad signing. They certainly needed some pitching.

I haven't been keeping up with the Tigers offseason much, but does anyone know if Oliver is in consideration for a rotation spot? I was pretty high on him for the 2009 draft.

Not a bad idea, but I really have no idea what to make of the guy lately.

Keep in mind he's only started 15 games since Sept 2008.

Yeah, I think that is kind've the book on Penny. Average to decent pitcher when healthy but rarely stays healthy. Not a huge investment by the Tigers though. He could pay off for them if they can keep him off the DL.

The Tigers must've gotten to him before the DL could sign him to a long-term deal.

I like the signing. I like the price. I think Penny could have a good season for the Tigers in 2011.

If he pitches well in spring training then he could certainly work his way into the rotation, the organization is not shy about doing that, Verlander in 2006 and Porcello in 2009. Coke is being moved to a starter and now you've got Galarraga and Penny fighting for the 'fifth' spot. Injuries and performance have a way of not making initial plans work out so it wouldn't surprise me at all if Oliver either starts in the rotation or ends up there during the season. But right now the plan isn't to consider him.

Agreed, it seems like a Freddy Garcia-esque deal for Detroit. All depends on how often he goes on the DL.
