I nicknamed this guy Will "Oh Man" when he was with the Cubs. Not particularly excited. He's another lefty though which we desperately need.

I'm not the biggest Ohman fan either but if he is used as a LOOGY, he might not be too bad. According to his career splits, left handed hitters hit about .200 off of him which isn't too shabby. Right handed batters kill him though. Relievers are such a crap shoot. If you look at Ohman's career numbers, he has had your prototypical up and down bullpen career:

Ohman did have a decent season last year.. I wonder if this move makes Sale goes into the rotation and Jackson being traded.

Or Sale to the minors to start.

I think Sale starts ST in the rotation, and depending on Peavy's health could stay there, go to the minors or take the McCarthy role or a bigger role in the pen.

I'm OK with an Ohman signing as long as it's relatively cheap. He's a better LOOGY option than somebody like Randy Williams and he's always had a good K/IP ratio.

I am sure it will result in a thread from you regardless.

Seems like an unnecessary pot-shot that doesn't belong here. Take some time off to learn to be a bit kinder to fellow WSIers.

Ohman is a good enough second LH out of the pen.

I hope Thornton for closer is not the plan with a move like this.

The Trib notes that the signing would be for around $1.5 million.

That's pretty steep.

If you assume (and I personally don't) that this means Sale is now in the rotation, that means the Sox bullpen is:

Thornton
Ohman
Pena
Santos
Crain
a rookie

They still need another good / decent right hander.

Now if Sale stays in the bullpen then I assume they are done with it.

Eh, I used to call him Will "Bad Omen," but with pen guys, you never know. He could be alright, and we needed depth.

At least it's another arm, I guess.

I think every single person on the planet that knows him as an MLB pitcher has made that joke.

We need a lefty. And he isn't completely awful, so sure.

$1.5 M ain't that big of a deal, so... whatever. As long as it keeps Harrell off our Opening Day roster, I'm down.

Perfect. Ohman is not great but he's good enough to take the pressure off in case Sale needs to be a starter this year due to Peavy not coming back as expected.

The bullpen can still be very solid with the addition of one more RH arm - even a swing man type.

That and a good defensive OFer would complete this team. This is a nice move.

Exactly. I would think Infante will be that rookie but maybe not. This last pitcher they should be able to get by signing a few guys to minor league deals.

I'm not a big believer in Peavy but can you imagine if he's his old self on June 1st how good this staff could be with the solid 5 and Sale back in pen? That would be pretty to watch.

Also, it would be almost necessary because the Sox have no minor league pitching depth.

So if that happens who is the 5th starter?

Buehrle
Danks
Floyd
Sale
?

I'm pretty sure Jackson is staying. I don't know why they would trade him. It would still be

Buehrle
Danks
Jackson
Floyd
Sale

I dont think Kenny would give up one of our top prospects (Hudson) for Jackson and then turn around and trade him for other prospects a year later

I think this is right. If Peavy comes back full strength by May or June, then the Sox will have a surplus and can deal Jackson.

I suspect that the only reason the Sox would deal Jackson for prospects now would be to clear salary space to sign Rafael Soriano. If that happened, then the Sox would likely bring in someone to be the long man/5th starter at the start of the season. Candidates for that might be Freddy Garcia, Brad Penny, Jeff Francis, Justin Duchscherer, John Maine or maybe even Tom Gorzelanny, if the Cubs have no room for him after the Matt Garza trade.

Ha ha ha...Will Ohman was the missing piece that sets all this in motion.

If that's the plan, then first you deal Jackson, then you acquire scraps like Ohman.

Would have rather had him for one but he is a good back-up lefty reliever. I accept.

I would have given him a year, then use whatever I have left to go after Soriano. But anyway. He'll fit as a LOOGY.

The Sox should look to build their BP out of guys with splits like Ohman's. Since Guillen loooooooooooooooves L-L and R-R match-ups, at least we know he'll be used in the proper role (from that standpoint... I hope).

EDIT: 2 mil PER YEAR for 2 years? ugh.
