Not a good move for him. Now he has to face the Orioles more often.

I am surprised he got that much money. Then again, Boston throws around money like a drunken sailor. Best of luck Bobby. I hope you pitch horribly and are cut, and then catch on with another team and pitch lights out again. Not that Theo would mind the $12 mil wasted. Theo would use his mystical stat knowledge to sign another struggling reliever next year for $7 mil a year.

Personally would have rather had Jenks at 6 mil than Crain at 4.3, but so be it. Great shot for him to win another ring.

Sometimes a guy just needs a change of scenary. I think more than most athletes I've seen in recent memory, Jenks needed to go elsewhere to clear his head.

I got laughed at in another thread last night when I said that I would rather have Bobby for 2/12 than Wood for the same money.

Oh well I guess Theo doesn't think it's funny; solid move by the BoSox. Good luck Bobby!

True, but I'm not sure Boston is the place to go to clear one's head. Regardless, best of luck to Bobby.

H/9, BB/9, WHIP, ERA, ERA+ all trending the wrong way over the last 3 years.

Good riddance.

Unfortunate he signed with Boston, I will have to root against him.

Paps wasn't actually Cy Young with the Orioles either

One thing to consider is that Jenks might be more confident as a set-up guy than as the closer on a contending team, at least until he gets his confidence (and ability to consistently throw his curve for strikes) back.

Do the BoSox give him Pedro's number or does he get to pick another?

Been told by a Boston fan that Olney reported that they promised Jenks a chance at the closer's job in 2012 "when" they move Papelbon.

Too bad. Wouldn't mind having Bobby at that price. I would say good luck, but I really hate the Red Sox. As someone else mentioned, I think Jenks at 2/12 is definitely better than Crain at 3/13...oh well, it was time to move on. Good luck against the Yanks, Bobby.

Some of you have probably read this, but in light of the signing, Nick Cafardo had a link to an old article about Bobby Jenks after the 2005 WS. Pretty good read.

For those who love to 2nd, 3rd, and eve 4th guess the FO decisions, this article is worth reading. Does anyone believe at this point that LAAAAA made a mistake giving up on Jenks? Does anyone believe it was a certainty that Jenks would be the final puzzle to the 2005 championship year? Does anyone believe it was a mistake for the Sox to non-tender him? Does anyone believe it was a mistake for Boston to sign him?

All true, which I believe are signs that Jenks lost some focus and commitment over the years. The change of scenary (and reduction of salary) could be the 2nd wake-up call he needs.

Haha. It's a good article about a guy we have followed pretty closely for the past five years. It's more about the man named Bobby Jenks and what he went through to make it to SOX in 2005..not what he did after that. It didn't have much to do with playing baseball at all.

I was referring to who Jenks is and his (likely) constant battles to overcome a horrible childhood. My point is that while we fans (including me at times) evaluate any GM's decisions in a vacuum, there is always more to it than we know. Obvious statement to make, I know, but I think it is worth stating from time to time. Jenks' history and his success is as good an example of such as I've become familiar with in awhile. IMO, none of the GMs involved in Jenks' career made the wrong decision for his team.

Ultimately I was surprised the White Sox non-tendered Jenks, not that people didn't say it was coming, but because when push came to shove, the White Sox just weren't deep enough in the bullpen to let him go. It looks like Jenks is better off having been non-tendered, and it looks there is a sudden Red Sox cheering section at WSI, just as a lot of people here became Twins fans when Jim Thome signed to play in Minnesota.

This sucks for us -- we get cheated out of a first round pick, because Boston's is already gone in an earlier free agent signing.

Huh? Bobby doesn't garner any compensation. He was still under Sox control and non-tendered.

100% correct. It wasn't the velocity, it was the control of his breaking pitches. The hammer curve he had from 2005-2008 was a beauty. When he added the cutter in 2007, that made him even better. Last season, I'm not sure he threw one curve ball for a strike and his cutter got flat too many times. He still had enough moxy to gut out 27 saves in 2010 but it was definitely not a banner year. I could see the old "change of scenery" scenario allowing Bobby to return to form. I love Bobby but it was time for both he and the Sox to part ways.

There's no doubt that the Sox bullpen could still use Jenks. I think the Sox could have probably re-signed him a few weeks ago on a 1 or 2 yr. deal at about $ 5 mil. per. He clearly wanted to return. Maybe it had more to do with personality than anything else for the Sox.

I think if the Sox would have done that (paycut) and told him that he has to compete and earn the closer role that may have served as enough of a wakeup call for him.

Anyway, it's too bad that both Putz and Jenks are gone. I think that for a few dollars more both of them would have helped the Sox more than Jesse Crain will as he's never been a closer or as dominant as these two in his career.

The Sox pitching is still thin. Either they need to pony up some more money for pitching or they need to make a trade. And, they can't trade pitching. That basically leaves Quentin as the trade bait unless they are willing to push the payroll close to $ 130 mil.

A Boston view on Jenks

Bobby Jenks was great for the White Sox. I was there at Game 1 of the 2005 World Series and I don't think that I will ever forget Neal Cotts striking out Morgan Ensberg and Mike Lamb and then Jenks striking out Jeff Bagwell to subdue an Astro rally in which runners were at 1st and 3rd with nobody out in the top of the 8th and the Sox leading 4-3.

Having said all that, Jenks has not been the same pitcher the last couple of seasons. For example, he had a lot of trouble getting his breaking pitches over the plate last year. I know that Boston fans are excited about adding Jenks to the 2011 Red Sox but do they still think of him as the lights out closer from 2005? If so, there might be some disappointment.
