For those of you with plenty of money burning a hole in your pocket, this month's Lelands auction includes Raul Casanova's 2005 White Sox championship ring:
http://lelands.com/Auction/AuctionDetail/66000/November-2010-Catalog/Sports/Rings-And-Awards/Lot416~2005-Raul-Casanova-Chicago-White-Sox-World-Championship-Ring-and-Presentation-Box (http://lelands.com/Auction/AuctionDetail/66000/November-2010-Catalog/Sports/Rings-And-Awards/Lot416%7E2005-Raul-Casanova-Chicago-White-Sox-World-Championship-Ring-and-Presentation-Box)

I haven't seen any of these being sold yet, so I thought I'd share. I hope Mr. Casanova is doing well financially, and simply isn't very sentimental about his "five plate appearances" championship season.

Why would he auction off his World Series ring? He can't be that hard up for cash, can he???

The list of professional athletes who made waaaaaaaaaaaaay more money than Raul Casanova during their playing careers and are in financial ruin is endless.

It's kind of sad. Not so sad that I think we need to start a "Money for Pro Athletes" charity, but usually these guys get destroyed because they don't know anything about money management and then they surround themselves with enablers who drain them of their cash all while smiling and telling them it's OK.

Maybe he doesn't place any meaning on the ring because he wasn't really a member of the team?

He was in the dugout. He was in the clubhouses spraying champagne. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

Not knowing much about him, I suspect Raul Cassanova is no longer playing baseball, and the 10-20 grand he can make on the ring could help buy him a house or help save money for his kids' college.

Not every pro baseball player makes 15 million in a season.

He has made decent money (http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/c/casanra01.shtml). This total is through 2002, he played until 2008.

Have 50 WSI'ers chip in $300 and buy for $15K. Everyone gets it for one week per year (similar to day with the Stanley Cup).

I had to stop and remember who Raul Casanova was.

And to be honest with you, I'm still not sure.

September callup.

Well that explains it. Apparently he wasn't too memorable!

Maybe he is true to his last name, that could put him in this position.

Nice ring !!!
I wonder why he would auction it?
Even if I didn't play long for team that won a championship , I don't think I would ever sell it .

I'd love to buy one of these someday. Can't afford it now, though.

As cool as it would be to have a 2005 ring, I would feel so weird having some player's ring just because he needed cash. It just seems wrong, unless I was planning to donate it to a museum or something. Is it just me?

Is it just me?

It's just you. It's not like we're talking about AJ's or Paulie's ring here. We're talking about a career backup catcher who lucked into a September call-up to a championship team. The ring obviously has no sentimental value to him.

anybody have some contact info for Raul? I'll trade him my SGA Replica World Championship ring for his 2005 Actual Ring straight up. I'll even throw in my Esteban Loaiza bobblehead. Come on Raul...spin the wheel and make the deal.

I'm on the market for a wedding ring...........

Still a week to go in the auction, but the bid is still less than what I paid for Ms. Doub's engagement ring.

This is bull****, I could be a bachelor with a World Series ring.

At the current price, I would buy it. But if this is anything like an eBay auction, people won't bid until the last few minutes and the actual sales price will be substantially more.

If I was Raul Cassanova, I wouldn't have a problem selling it. It's not like he was truly part of the team and its not like he's a fan like us with some emotional attachment to the title.

To him, I bet its just a former job and some expensive jewelry he got for free that he'll never wear.

Apparently he is selling an old catchers mask too.

Even with the minimum MLB pension, he should be able to live a moderate lifestyle on that once he can collect. I would also guess that being a World Series champion, he could use that to his advantage to get a job somewhere in Chicago.

Sad to see someone have to sell his ring, but there are a lot of reasons athletes sell them if they have several (ex. charity) or if they want to fund their kids' education. Or he could be like Kurt Warner and not care about the hardware...
