He was a big part of the Padres success last season. It is pathetic they can't throw 5mil at him again.

Well, maybe there are conflicting stories on this. I read a Tweet this morning that Garland actually chose less money to go to the Dodgers.

You don't see this very often: Jon Garland walked away from a bigger contract option with the Padres to take a lot less from the Dodgers.

Garland's hometown is Valencia, CA which is just north of Los Angeles. He must want to play near friends and family.

That has always been the issue with Garland. He made no secret of the fact that he wanted to go back home to pitch. I imagine that was a factor in why the Sox let him go.

That's actually not true at all. He wanted to stay on the Sox.

Everything I read on the subject before his contract came up suggested that he much preferred to play on the West Coast, preferably southern California.

He wanted to stay in Chicago. He considered it home here after pitching eight years for the Sox. Buehrle confirmed this at Soxfest.
