He's up against some tough competition, but it looks like he's come on late as a strong candidate.

A "just for fun" scenario. What if Joey Cora is named the next manager of the Brewers and the Sox filled the bench coach position with the "dissed by the Cubs" Ryne Sandburg? What would the fallout be among the fanbase on the North Side?

I'd thought about this. But I don't know if Ozzie knows Sandberg(sp?).

As Ozzie likes to hire guys that he knows/had played with/ex-SOX players, a Sandberg(sp?) hire would be outside his M.O.

I'm not saying that I'd necessarily be opposed to this possibility. I just don't see Ozzie changing his ways...

Ozzie doesn't rule out the possibility...

That would really stick in Cubs fans craw... I don't like the idea, but Cubs-Sox would be a lot more interesting next year. :D:

Personally would like to see Omar stay on as the bench coach.

When I told the super Cub fan in my office what Ozzie said about hiring Sandberg ("why not?"), he cursed a blue streak that would have made a drunken sailor blush.

He's probably staying an active player for one more year (hopefully with our Sox).

I'd love to see him as a defensive/bench coach, though.

I would love to see Omar stick around on the coaching staff, too, but if there's one thing Ryne earned street cred for during his tenure in the Cubs minor league system, it is being able to work with younger players, something the Sox are notoriously poor at. So, while Omar would likely be my #1 choice to replace Joey if he left for Milwaukee, I won't exactly cry if Ryno is brought on board. I mean, how much does the ****ing bench coach really do, anyway. Just the look on the Baby Bears' fans' faces alone would probably be worth a year of his salary.

I really don't see how you could let a person the caliber of Omar Vizquel leave the organization at this point if it could be avoided.

2nd interview? Really? Take the job, Joey. Then Ozzie, help hire a good bench coach that is not one of your boys.

I actually heard the interview, and Ozzie's comments aren't anywhere near as sensational as the dumb media will have you believe.

He sounded like he was being both professional and oddly courteous for Ozzie. I don't even recall him dropping ONE F-bomb during the entire interview!

But to me, the most telling comment Ozzie had in the interview was: "I don't know ryno." Given Ozzie's preference to hire guys he knows/played with, [Raines, Walker, Cora] this pretty much indicates to me that Sandberg wouldn't be a legit candidate for Cora's job.

Cooper, Nieves, Jeff Cox, Razor Shines, didn't play with Ozzie. I'm not sure if he knew them or not before he hired them although Cooper and Walker came with the job, and there's really no way of knowing if Ozzie would hire Sandberg or if Sandberg would even consider the White Sox. Chances are Cora will be back next year anyway.

Before I even thought of Sandberg, I would see if I could get Sandy Alomar Jr. in here.

Cooper has been in the SOX organization since 1988, so there had to have been some connection between he and Ozzie. Alternatively, it was possible that Ozzie didn't have another candidate in mind, so he took the "organizational guy" for that job.

Jeff Cox was a coach in Florida with Ozzie, so there was again a connection of familiarity.

Razor Shines, like Cooper, had been in the SOX organization prior to him being the 3rd base coach in '07.

Only Juan Nieves [out of this group] has no prior connection to the SOX or to Ozzie.

I'll agree that it is most likely that Cora will be back. But, the overarching majority of the SOX coaching staff have some connection to the manager or to the organization. Thus, I still doubt that Ryne Sandberg would be a real candidate for a coaching job here. I also maintain that Ozzie was merely being polite when he said he'd consider Sandberg for a position, while the stupid media is trying to make more out of it than they should.

Cora has as much chance as my dog getting any Manager job he is interviewed to fill minority requirement only!

There's at least some precedence set here, as Bruce Kimm came over to the Sox in 2003 to coach 3B for Manuel after the Cubs let him go.

Having said that, I disagree with your premise. Cora is a well-respected baseball mind whose star remains on the rise in his industry.

I don't think Cora has a shot to be honest. He seems like the guy who gets invited to the dinner to only find out the girl he is chasing also invited her fiance.

Are there any coaches internally in the Sox minor league system that is thought highly enough by Ozzie and the team to be promoted to Bench Coach?

Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times reports that the Brewers have hired Angels bench coach Ron Roenicke as manager.

I'll laugh if this isn't true.

It's been confirmed now Roenicke got the job. So does that mean Cowley gets some credit for breaking a story?

Give him credit for having Oney as a source?
